There are images of women portrayed in the media that really piss me off. Recently, they read the news re the woman who was raped and got less compensation because she had been drinking and the footage to go with the story was of drunk women falling over in mini-skirts. Appalling!!

Just to clarify, does the "your" here refer to Multi specifically, men on this forum or men in general? As I read this thread, Ed posted the pic and used the phrase "due to obvious reason". Far be it from me to stick up for Multi (man's demonstrably capable of doing that for himself) but he just replied that that "reason" didn't do it for him. He was responding to the original post, it wasn't his assumption that she was/should be photographed for the titillation of men.

To my mind the most obvious reason was that, out of all the athletes who posed for the photographer, only Pendleton and Hoy won gold. Hoy's already an MBE, so Pendleton is more intriguing. Plus between the photo of Hoy and the one of Pendleton, the one of Pendleton would work better for the cover because of the composition - the one of Hoy would have been quite difficult to get to look right on the page, I think, because his pose is so stretched out.

Just to make this explicitly clear - I don't think BJP have done anything wrong because I don't think they put Pendleton on the cover thinking that sex would sell - I think they put her on the cover because she's a young gold medallist and it was the best of the photos they had to choose from.

Actually, the compensation cut was overturned. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority has apologized and admitted that they've wrongly applied the compensation cut in at least 14 other cases as well:

In that respect the forum is probably just a microcosm of society, I wouldn't expect it to be any different (whether or not it should be is a different matter).

Male titillation shouldn't be the obvious reason but often is as sex sells. Lots of womens magazines have good looking chaps on them to entice the reader to pick them up. I think finding the likes of Pendleton atractive (wich I do) is a good thing. Half her appeal is that she is really good at something and not a Paris Hilton type.

Women who go out and get really drink while wearing practicaly nothing are maybe giving the impresion that they want sex. However sex is still a mutual desision. Rape is completely unexeptable and just because a women was drunk and showing off a lot of leg does not give one the green light nor does it in anyway remove any of the blame from the attacker.
