Photos on your bike...

My friend Amelia's new bike, some of you might have met her on the coffee ride:

iphone camera - complete crap, wtf is going on with the lampost?

It's an old Raleigh 5speed btw.

Love it. Slow scan speed - if you Google iPhone propeller, or something along those lines, there's a far more extreme example. Blobs of the prop seem separated from the plane.

Yeah, weird effect isn't it?

Basically, the phone looks at sections of the photo sensor in a regular pattern; top-left pixel is red, next one along is a little less red, etc, all along a line. When it gets to the end it jumps down a line and does the same thing again. If the image is moving - like you're on a moving bike or a propeller is spinning - then the scene has changed slightly in that time. Makes a warped image.

That's a little simplified; it may do it row by row or line by line, and there may be multiple sections of the sensor handled in parallel, but that's essentially what's going on.

I fucking love that propeller photo... I saw it before knowing it's relevance and it just feels really striking. I might do some experimenting with my i-phone.

Can't find my phone tp pc cable thing. I have a similar photo taken last week on a flight to brum. Will check juniors toy box in the morning.
