I'm not the fittest but I've done it on the geared bike, found it fine as long as you take it slow, and stand on the pedals just for that really nasty bit where it the road kicks up almost vertical after the cemetery gates.
also tried it on the single speed a couple of times, it's death, nearly toppled over last time before conceding I was going to have to get off and push. happens a lot, hence my rubbish forum name.
I think i will try it on the geared bike! At least i might and only "might" make it to the top! Swains lane FTW? I think more like for the lunatics!

I find it best fixed. Much more power though the back wheel. Quick blast then your finished.

Are some HTFU Swains Lane climbing lessons in order over the coming weeks?

It looks that way. When I have got the fixed back up and running, and I can grip properly with my hand again I will be doing laps to get my legs back.

You need to harden up man. Get on that bike;)
I had a dream last night that I broke my ankle and had a cast put on. I drilled out and tappered holes so I could attach my Look Keos! But I'm far more of a pussy in real life.

We should set up a way of getting free pints for those who are skint. Every 1 laps of West Hill / Swains Lane = 1/2 pint.
People can contribute to a pot. The more you have drunk, the more difficult it becomes and those who have contributed can take the piss out of you when you return.
Just an idea like! :)

That is fantastic. Put me down for 10 laps tonight.

this is a hilariously patrician idea, using the poor among us as sport for the rich folk!
hah, let's watch them suffer for their watery ale, the hovel-dwellers, while we quaff fine claret and fondle serving wenches.

interesting. will swap my rear ss for fixed next time, see if it makes it do-able sans derailleur. I've gone ss in the past on local loops because I hate the crazy spinny downhill when riding fixed, never really thought about the difference it makes to going UP.

I am getting worried now, when I said I did most of swains last night at walking pace - I was being literal - laps? you mast all be mad! I dont think the really steep bit would be possible for me at the moment, I need to get me some toe clips and straps

Go Clipless (SPD, time atac). It makes sutch a diference. It would be really hard on flats.

clipless, hmmm - visions of myself slowly falling over at traffic lights

I find it much easier to get in and out of clipless than cages and straps. Although I have fallen over theying to get out of both.

Common mistake mate. It's a shed load easier with clipless. True them once and you'll never, ever go back!

s'true Sasmon what they say - clipless is the way.
if it's any comfort, I literally fell over at the traffic lights the very first day I went clipless, many moons ago, and got (rightly) laughed at by many strangers in cars. and scratched up all over.
but that was the first and last time it happened, and I've never looked back since... just remember to slacken the tension for the first ride (wish someone had told me that!)

I wish that rule had be in place last week - I'd have been on for 4 free pints :(

Listen you weirdos. If you want to do that, its easy enough to incorporate into the laps. After all, the 'Mens Bathing Ponds' are just at the bottom of the hill. So you can kill 2 birds with one stone. I hear there is a lot of weird shit going on down there in the summer. A pint and a rock for a mere 10 minutes of 'work'

I once saw a girl with a tee-shirt that said 'I suck cock for free!' I asked her about the offer and she told me to 'fuck off you pervert'. Charming young lady. I considered it to be false advertising. Oh, this was in Salisbury.
