  • Normally I wouldn't post about something as mundane as a puncture but today I found myself in unfamilliar SE16 with what I can only describe as the worst puncture I have ever had. To make it worse, I didnt have a spare so I had to repair it... which if you'd have asked me before I would have said it was impossible. so i am fairly chuffed that it's now holding air.

    What's your worst??

  • ha! That tube was shredded! How'd you repair it?

  • Did someone fire that screw out of gun?

Doh! SE16! 'course they did ;-)

  • ha! That tube was shredded! How'd you repair it?

Id just tie a knot in it!

  • Riding along Hackney Road towards Cambridge Heath Station I had a plastic fork tear out the sidewall of my tire and inner. Both were utterly shredded and not at all repairable even by Jacqui standards.

I was with a friend and was destined for Cambridge so had to hotfoot it to London Fields for a full replacement. They were a bit dubious/relectant about the loan of the track pump until I agreed to leave my credit card with them as they didn't want me pumping up in the shop.

Helped construct an extra large patch for a 3/4" gash on the Christmas Day ride once.

+1 how the hell you ride off on that jac?

what is it with bike shops that won't let you in with a bike?

    pisses me off.

the only luxury my repair kit has is a roll of patches from Halfords.. I cut made to measure chunks and then held my breath and hoped that they wouldn't stick together.

  • I am now out of glue, so screwed if i need to do it again tonight ;)

    that's one helluva fork dude..
Strange that they were like that at LF? I know some shops don't like people fixing their bike in the shop but if they are not going to let you in to use the pump the least they can do is come out with you with the pump - what if you didn't have a CC???

  • I know, my friend who was riding behind me said they saw it go under and then explode out of my tire and it landed about 10ft away.

Not sure what was going on at LF as a lot of people have described them as really helpful. It wasn't as if they were busy inside. I was back in within a minute and then had to wait while the person who took my card faffed with another customer who couldn't decide about something. I just kept thinking that it was bizarre that any independant would let themselves be worse than Evans.

I've since been into about 6 Halfords following punctures and never once been refused loan of a track pump. I put it down to just dumped saturday boy planetary alignment.

  • christ, thats a fucking mean tear...

    good repair skills !

I am wracking my brains to think but about 15 years ago I had a puncture repair kit with a 6"x6" square of patch in it, also a small scalpel blade. Basically you cut your own patches to size.

Make mental note to locate one again, have only basic repair kit with me now :-(

  • nice repair though.

Scalpel blade would be ace... I typically carry a manicure set and used the scissors.
the other bonus of the Halfords patch sheet is that it's really cheap ;)

  • Thinking about it now I'm sure it was from Halfrauds, you get a small roll of it. You have to buy it seperatley, its like 6" wide by 12" long.

  • yep that's the one I get ;)

  • sadly, I just went to see it it held and I had to go get a new tube.... :(

EDIT IT DID SURVIVE IT JUST LOST PREASURE. !!! WHOOOHOOO

  • Nice work.. a whole different kind of p_nct_re down sarf then?

  • ^ hippy you have C+ puncture superstition too???

  • No, he's just a cunt.

  • Ive had a couple good ones recently, first basically the exact same as yours jacqui, then the most recent and probably all round worst one ever.

got puncture in the same 9 patched tube at 5am while on an all nighter, went to friends house to fix it, all was going smoothly with no parents woke up and i was nearly finished fixing it, just as im pumping the tube up, friends father comes out and said soiled tube explodes probably waking up whole street and agravating friends dad. had to borrow i tyre and tube from him then cycle home only to stay up all night then go to work because i would have never got up if i went to sleep.

Can we call this my introductory post? Even though i have posted a good few times but never really introduced myself.

    Gareth from Glasgow.

  • i don't really get the whole puncture repair thing - a new tube is £3.50 or whatever, and easy to carry a spare

  • heh, I must be tyred.

thought you were serious for a minute!

jacqui had been a good samaritan and given it away only the day before
