  • Ed, I can not find a Rigida home page, do they have one??

    They used to be at www.rigida.com, but the server seems to be borked, constantly returning a php error

    This search string
    site:rigida.com - Google Search

    gets you thumbnails of all the images on the site, so you can see the rim shapes.

  • thanks for that mdcc

  • Again, I see no evidence of either ⅛" or VumaChrono versions, and given the manufacturing technique pretty much zero possibility of either custom rings or a production ring for such a micro-niche. If you have a hard-on for Praxis rings, feel free to get some for your standard PCD, standard chainring size, road bike.

    Also, and these are relatively minor points but still have a small bearing on the matter, Hansell Composites are a UK company, so my money stays in the UK economy, they are cheap compared with the other options, and I've bought custom products from them before and know their quality of both manufacture and service. Only a strong aversion to using a carbon fibre chainring would make me go shopping elsewhere.

    Sorry I keep forgetting about the Vuma specific measurements.

  • Andra CSS 30;

  • This is tasty ed and very similar to my plans.

    Same Phil rear with SON front to charge all maner of accoutrements... manly a decent digi camera etc.

    For 700s Ive riden a719s for some time and they have done me well- was thinking of going for a pimp look (rather than strength) with some Grand Bois... but the Rigidas look good for 26's

    Thorn Sherpa with flat bar. - Custom Robin Mather ;) and nitto moustache bar
    Surly front and rear steel rack. - Tubus rear and Nitto front or Robins own SS ones.
    Carradice Super C panniers (front and rear) - Ortliebs
    XT drivetrain, abet 9 speeds instead of 8. - XTR M900 mechs and XT 9 speed cassette (i know i should go 8 but carrying a spare chain is pretty easy).
    thumb shifter with friction mode.- DA on Paul thumbie mount
    honjo mudguard. - VO ones (im a cheapskate)
    Schmidt front light. - Schmidt Edelux
    Schwable Extreme tyres. - Yup.

  • How much was the hub through BLB?

  • Thorn Sherpa with flat bar. - **Custom Robin Mather **;) and nitto moustache bar

    honjo mudguard. - VO ones** (im a cheapskate)**

    yeah fucking right!

    I'd love to go with your set-up, but budget mean I'm on the Thorn, the whole bike cost me £300 from a lass in the isle of man, insofar I must've spend £800 altogether to get a decent set of component/accessories, which is not too bad considering OTP Thorn Sherpa start at £1300 with basic component.

    Got the DA shifter, but like this though, work out a bit cheaper.

    how come a thumbie when you got a moustache bar? I mean why not bar end?

    hubs I think £267 through BLB, pricey but I don't want to go for an XT one, they're good for touring, but being MTB hubs, I doubt they'll handle a huge amount of weight.

  • Ed, why flat bars?

    honjo mudguard. - VO ones (im a cheapskate)

    Clearly. The rest of your bike sounds shit too.

  • As much as I like drop bar, I like to have control, especially with a fully laden touring bike off the beaten path, secondly top tube is too long for drop.

    personal preference perhaps, but I seen quite a lots of people having flat bars nowadays;

  • Lots of them only have flats because of the brake system used and gear shifter etc.
    Can't see much difference between those bars above with extensions and my Midgets with hoods. At least I've got drop for ascends - really helpful with a heavy load and long chainstays, in my opinion.

    I will probably swap my bars when I get hydraulic brakes. Still, probably go for butterfly type ones to shorten the reach a bit (long top tube).

  • I had butterfly bar as an experiment, it's great to shift my hand around, but turn out that's exactly the problem I found, in the end I realised it's idea to have one good hand position than multiple compromised one, at least for me that is.

    I loved drop bar, especially on fast tour, but for a steady tour (50 miles average), a flat bar wouldn't be a deal killer for me, apart from headwind of course.

  • ^^
    Midget? Damn predictive text! I meant "Midge".

  • yeah fucking right!

    I do consider Robin Mather's as cheap... for you what you get!

    Seriously been saving and scrimping for ages to get this baby together- most of what I have will come straight off my old tourer:

    the whole bike cost me £300 from a lass in the isle of man

    Nice - visited the blokes at Thorn a while back- nice guys- tough old bikes. Planning on the Great Divide circa 2013, so might be considering a 26"er for then- though might have to be a 90s MTB conversion.

    how come a thumbie when you got a moustache bar?

    Never got on with the bar-ends on the moustache- plus I like using TT levers. The Paul's are lovely, although those sjs ones a almost exactly the same. VO have just released some too- got a pair the other day for the ladies tourer.

    £267 through BLB, pricey but I don't want to go for an XT one

    Im currently running XT- whats the issue with weight? They have done well so far for about 5000 miles- still smooth.

    Sorry by Honjo, I mean Gilles Berthoud, they're £40 and well made;

    my second choice for sure- but got an account with VO through the Union Cycle Works, so can get them cheap!

  • Fizik Ladies Arione Donna

  • The main point is that the XT were designed as an MTB hubs rather, so while it can handle off road perfectly fine, i'm concern about whether the XT will able to sustain a fully laden touring bike, even though there's rarely a failure rate.

    Since the XT were design as an MTB hubs, and managed very well for years on touring bicycle (with service every now and then), then I feel more comfortable having a 'fit and forget' hub that designed for the exact kind of tour I'm doing.

    The Great Divide have been on my mind too, another reason for the Thorn, but might go for the Nomad with front suspension though;

  • ignore.

  • fnkcing saddle IS being held at customs for frikkin' payment. Grrr.

  • See your thinking on the XTs- although you are going to have to be doing some remote touring to worry about failure rates ;) - I suppose they consider force of impact on design- which is similar if your jumping off something, or going over bumps with heavy loads. Its the drag that must be the biggest issue- I wonder if just changing the bearings could work...

    Nomads are great, but heavy. Think I might go for a decent 90's Explosif, decent front suspension forks (servicable, like Pace) and then run a Bob Yakk off the back... I might well be trying to do it with a greyhound in the back... thats the plan anyway!

  • not bike related but I have a cajon coming in the post...
    I'm super excited.

    I noticed last summer alot of the touring cyclists along the trans-canadian highway route had drop's with aero bars aswell. Not something i'd seen very often in the UK (for touring)

    Sound like an excellent set-up, even a modern Explosif would be fine.

    A BoB Yakk would be the top of my list for the Great Divide too, I liked the Nomad because of the Rohloff really, if money no objection, a custom titanium MTB would be my choice.
