  • i don't think anyone is disputing that these are hipster rims. meh. whatever. we're all hipsters. some of us are just out of the closet about it.

  • deep section unmachined = no brake = fixed gear

though sometimes the equation goes wrong:

deep section unmachined + more than 5 points on hipster bingo = no brake + member of the beloved "fixie scene"

    or even worse -

deep section unmachined + more than 5 points on the hipster bingo / front brake anyway as it's a singlespeed really x black streaks = member of the bewildering "fake fixie scene" going straight over his chopped risers every few days.

  • sure, what I meant is that most cyclists (even gearie-wierdie's) are into bike porn. we pull up at lights next to the cutest girl on a bike, and the first thing we look at is the bike. geared folk start with the rear mech, we start with rims, hubs amd crank.

tht's why the spotted thread is so popular IMO...

    +1 . . a most astute observation

  • the aero advantage is worth it over then weight penalty and harsher ride when rockin from hoxton to brick lane.

i guess it's all about priorities

  • I thought the track ends were going on the other way around, tynan?

  • genuine question/notion: does grappling with a deeper rim's idiosyncracies in street conditions mean your shoulders and arms get a better workout? Or would it not be that noticeable?

  • Surely the first thing any cycling equipment enthusiast checks out at the lights is the frame?

I like gears, but there's nothing interesting about rear mechs.

The only thing that gives your arms a better workout is a taller gear, more time out of the saddle, and longer rides.

Deep sections are marginally more difficult to spin up, but the effort accelerating on shallow section rims would be the same, cos you'd be using a slightly bigger gear and accelerating faster anyway.

  • heavier bike? wide handlebars?

  • Singlespeed or fixed mtbing gives your arms (and back) a major workout, that's fo sho.

    Haha!

That was my plan, so that they acted like they had a built in spacer, but Ted set the stays to 120mm.

    :)

  • cos they look good and there is no such thing as too much of a good thing;)

  • looks awesome tynan

  • They look good, not many cyclists out there are trying to break the hour record or even shave 3 seconds off their P.B. - so the fact that the rim is 100g heavier than an OpenPro will not even register on their radar, but these 'casual' cyclists might be attracted to the look of a deep section wheel, especially if they are in vogue.

We might as well post up on an athletics forum about all the idiots wearing trainers that plainly offer no sporting advantage.

So, I reckon I will go with the Hip-hop slavery to Mammon option. I will admit to being a weight weenie, so can't bring myself to put a Deep V on a bike, but I do like the look of them.

Anyhow those aren't deep, these bastards are deep:

    What saddle is that?

  • Selle Italia SLR (might be the funky split one or the carbonio - same shit)

  • I'd like to know where he found that fork?

  • Isn't it the original Tommasini fork?

Yep, SLR - just the standard one, no split or carbon rails, got it off Gabes in a 'back alley saddle swap'.

  • Isn't it the original Tommasini fork?

    Yes !

For the money I pay you to answer my quesitions, I could have had two edscobles or eight Big Daddy Waynes.

I am starting to wonder whether this deal we struck is worthwhile for either of us, I am getting terrible wind and you are up all night doing my Lndfgss.com admin.

  • Oh so the fork was with the frame

I can't wait to see this one built

  • h2o: My Shamal front isn't really heavy... it's like 900g, not too bad compared to a normal 32 spoke wheel.. and it's aero - which is veeeery important for riding along with 25-30kph ;) - but okay, the primary thing is just that it looks good. I don't like that black one though, i want deepv's to have a sharp knife-like profile.
