Go to a reputable studio and ask to see their portfolios of any cover ups they've made.
Vargas at frith tattoo is a winner for that, though she has a long waiting list.

Ive been to a few and haven't been thrilled with the idea's they've put forward..admittedly, not checked out the one you mention...I wanted something more personable,...so many different styles with each artist, as yet, nothings jelled ...also, thought it might give someone here the chance to make a £ or 2.

Understandable, looking for an perfect artist is like shopping for that perfect pair of shoes.
http://www.valerievargas.com/ I have no clue what style you're going for, but I enjoy a lot of her work.
I have a horrible tattoo done and no longer speak to previous tattoo artist because of her bedside manner, it took me forever to find a good one, until this artist PM'd me on a body modification site that Im a member of, and the way she spoke to me made me feel comfortable. Plus a lot of my mates have had stuff done by her. I'd strongly recommend you to check her work out, perhaps try and pop in person tooGood luck.

bedside manner? they're basically scraping you with a needle for hours on end, who gives a fuck?

Er, you need to FEEL comfortable when getting tattooed, and I hated her digs, and she didn't like the fact I didnt want to go for a huge fuck off sleeve or piece just yet. Her linework isn't brillant, and has done some horrible shading on some tattoos on others.

saying she does a rubbish job is completely different to saying she didn't give you a cuddle when you were done

Ross, whilst she was tattooing me, she would make digs at/about me and that did NOT make me feel comfortable. That alone was a major factor on not going to the person in Essex anymore.
Then saw some god awful work on others, and that was it in total.I now have found a better artist now and us being in the same body modification website has made me even more comfortable.
Why are you acting like I've offended your sister?

Hope you didnt think I was originally on about Vargas. I was talking about a studio in Upminister who don't really have a waiting list.
I've learnt my lesson since then. I was 18 when I first started getting tattooed and stopped at 19 :PI'm now almost 23. We are all young once. Ahhh.
