  • They’re still a thing, also as @JB says, there’s a whole lot of pastel with no outlines happening as well at the moment. In a way it’s an investment in the future as you can always get a sick blastover sleeve to cover all your mushy pastel tats and form the background. Simon Earl has done some great ones over old pastels but he’s a twatty edgelord so I won’t post links to him.

  • Rep. Also describes my life to a T

  • Yeah, exactly. I just have tattoos.

  • Speaking of which, I got this a month or so ago and I just love it.

  • Let me just grow my curly tache back and I’ll do it

  • Patchwork is cute

  • maybe they just want anyone to know when they were born

  • Hey all. Looking for recommendations for good cover up artist. Will probably need heavy amounts of black. Possibly going to get something like a black rose done. Only thing I can think of that might work with small amounts of skin coloured skin left on my right arm.

Just realised it'll actually be a cover up of a cover up.

  • Heidi Fury would be my first call for a coverup/blackout and her flowers are top drawer.

  • That's pretty much spot on what I am looking for. Love the negative colour ones. Thanks very much for this recommendation @edmundro

Any idea what her waiting times are like...?

  • I think I might have talked about it before here but I have decided today to get the knife on my arm covered over. Not feeling it any more. Kids asking me why it's there. It's part of my family crest but it's the wrong vibe in London.

  • Honestly no idea, not been done by her before but know she’s a popular and well established artist. Met her briefly years ago at a studio in London she used to work at and seemed really cool.

    Fair reason for a coverup.

  • What's the hourly going rate these days? Possibly been about five years since my last one.

  • I’m paying £80 p/h for my current big project, but that’s Devon not London prices.

  • Not in the UK so maybe not even comparable but $200 per hour on large work is the going rate here, so about 150GBP p/h, which I think is fair for a good artist.

  • I don’t really know of anyone who goes on hourly rate, in the uk people usually price by the piece nowadays unless it’s ongoing work with an artist you know well. Have had plenty of convos with artists over the various reasons they don’t quote hourly rates any more.
Anywhere between £500-1300+/per full day is normal depending on the artist. Heidi won’t be cheap but she won’t be top tier price either, especially now she’s left London.

So basically it’s a ‘how long is a piece of string’ question :/

  • what, people are out here pricing backpieces with a flat rate nowadays?

  • I’d say it depends on the artist but yeah. I’d say in my experience it’s more a ‘fixed price agreed prior to work starting’ as opposed to a flat rate for a given limb/area.
For example, my partner has just started on a full trad Japanese sleeve. She’s been quoted a worst case scenario price based on the approximate number of full/half days required, with the understanding that if it goes quick it might be a bit cheaper but essentially she’s agreed to a given number of full day sittings. The artist in question only does traditional Japanese work so undoubtedly knows her onions and can quote accurately.

Look, I’m just a humble customer but spent more than enough time around a variety of artists around the world to have heard them say time and time again that they find the hourly rate question insulting as it doesn’t take into account planning/drawing time and often results in unfinished sleeves/customers trying to haggle etc etc
Far more normal to hear someone say ‘rough price for this piece would be £X, depending upon size/location’.

For the record I did pay for my back on an hourly rate but that’s cos it was an apprentice and was her first back so no idea how to price it. I was happy to take a punt on that one and glad I did.

  • Interesting stuff.

For context, I only have big pieces and they were/are all freehand so no real drawing time required. I too have traditional Japanese sleeves and chest plates, but I did my left side first, then my right. I also have one continuous Samoan piece from my knees to the middle of my back, which we’re still working through the shading on. So that’s 3 individual ‘pieces’ for the benefit of this discussion.

All of those pieces were done on an hourly rate, and the discussion never came up on time to complete, or whole piece pricing. I knew the hourly rate from the beginning, and from research and experience I knew I’d be looking at between 25h and 30h per side for my sleeves/chestplates and probably around 50h for my knees > lower back.

I always thought it was not the done thing to ask for full piece pricing for larger work - but I probably just read that somewhere and internalised it without validating it properly!

  • To be fair your experience sounds far more relevant than mine as I have multiple small pieces covering me, not big ongoing works like you so perhaps in that sphere quoting an hourly rate is more normal? I dunno.

I usually don’t ask prices, especially if it’s an artist I know as I’ll have a rough idea.
Of course the style of tattooing has a huge impact on cost- I’ve seen highly detailed micro portraits that come in at the same price as a nice full colour palm-sized banger due to the complexity of the piece.

At the end of the day the artist probably won’t be offended if you ask the price of a piece beforehand but will be offended if you look shocked/haggle afterwards when they tell you what’s owed…

  • I will definitely be asking some sort of price beforehand for sure!

  • I've had quite a few multi-day session pieces as well, and the price discussion has only ever really been around 'how much money do i need to bring?' re. the first session. After that, its kind of finished when its finished, as larger pieces can have a bit of scope creep (e.g. when it was decided to add in a linework skull into the stained glass panels on my front)

  • Today's shenanigans (part 1)
