hell no, its all about the struggle. then you get used to it and its sweet. till you up the gear and struggle again.. keep on it, do it every other day to begin with or once every three days perhaps then just step it up to more often.fair play for quitting the smoke and discovering the bike again.

Don't know how old you are but take it easy to start, you could fuck yerself if you go all out to soon.
It's not going to take every long at all for you to get in the swing of things. Three weeks of a little bit every night (maybe don't go up that hill to start) you will be amazed. The body is truly responsive. The misery and pain will soon go and instead you'll be feeling fantastic.

It really is a big case of HTFU - if you haven't been active for a while then it'll be hard - one gear or twenty - but fixed will get you fitter faster and you'll soon find yourself pushing yourself to breaking point to get up that hill even faster.
There's always an easier option, but if you stick with what you've got, in a couple of weeks you'll get it. Grit your teeth, concentrate on getting a consistent cadence, watch the weight fall off and realise that you're actually enjoying yourself.

BTW, you can build a wheel with mismatched spoke holes on rim and hub by missing some holes out. I'm sure i've seen that on http://www.sheldonbrown.com somewhere, just miss out 2 opposing spoke holes on a 36h hub when building it to a 32h rim. It'll be a gamble with your spoke lengths as technically they should all be different lengths, but with a small flange hub it may be possible.
It'll look shite though. ;-)

Anyway, would i have any issues fitting one to a Velocity or Mavic deep V style of wheel.
Mate - fitting a three-speed hub to an aerodynamic wheel would look kinda like putting city handebars on a carbon racer. Just don't, for your own sake.

oh and btw just now (11pm)i picked my fiancée from the St Pancreas Station, helped get all the things into taxi,
passed £20 to driver to take her to Edgware Road, Maidavale side.
To cut a long story short i got there before the taxi did, about 1min earlier.
Thats what i call smashing it :)

How easy is it to switch rear gear? If I buy a fixed gear I think I'd have to get a few different sized gears so that I can switch them depending on how I feel.
Isn't it possible to put a fixed gear each side of the hub and flip the wheel to use a different gear ratio?

Double-fixed flip-flop hub allows two cogs to be flipped between. You will generally just find the gear the works for you and your area and stick with it.

Yes. And if you carry a chain tool and lockring tool you can change sprockets out and about too. Which actually can be sensible if you go down the track and you need the extra gearing.

You can get way with a fixed-free hub if you only use the free side at the track - no skidding there, y'see.

Before i start getting into my SS build i wanted to see if i could handle it fitness wise, the bike would have been for my commute to work, but sadly after borrowing a mates bike for a couple of days i found that i had seriously under estimated the effort it took/takes to climb the what i thought were slopes and not hills on my way back home.
The next best thing for me i think until i'm fitter is a 3 speed, so question is can you build a 3 speed hub into any rim as long as it has 36 holes (which the 3 speed hub has) or are you limited to your rim selection.
I started 3 years ago on a massive 27 gear hybrid, after a while I thought' I dont use most of these gears' then went down to a 12 gear racer, thought the same thing again and went down to 6 speed, only really used 3 of them . so went to SS, of course it then follows you go to fixed. Been riding that for a month, each day am getting a bit stronger. It takes time but the more you ride the easier it gets. If I can do it at 45 I'm sure you can too.

Between Whitley and Shiremoor is practically flat. Ok, the slope is gradual but lasts a while. Just take it easy up Norham Rd.
You need practice bosshogg. Get out there on a slightly low gear, after a couple of months you'll be able to swap the rear cog and you'll never look back. Dont go for anything lower than a 66" gear to start with, its just not worth it.
...if you're worried they'll get nicked get them insured, get some decent locks and get out there and use em! Dylan is right - it takes no time to get fit, but I reckon you need to start slow and enjoy it!
