is it rude for me to say HTFU?
getting up those hills will make you fitter!
what's your commute?EDIT: damn beaten to it!

Think your hub should be fine on most rims. You could just try an easy gear ratio and be very patient. Unless you have some kind of unmentionable disability, you will get fitter if you keep at it.
-
• #5
Or put on a lower gear than your friend. Lower gear = easier = better fitness = spin to win.
-
• #6
you are only limited by the spokes you can buy... or have cut.
I am with slim and clefty though, after a week or 3 you will be fine.
and you'll be WAY fitter ;) and more confident. -

What hills for interests sake?

I've been out of cycling for years, for most of those years i've sat infront of my PC getting fatter and doing ......well.... what most people do on a PC, plus being a smoker (been quit now for 3 1/2 weeks), i'm not kidding here, my trip home the other day was just plain misery i seriously thought i was gonna die, Just thought a 3 speed might help a little plus you still get a cleanish look to the bike.

Bet its my nemesis, the Clerkenwell Col.

my house mate has a junior dolan track frame modified out and has a 3 spd sturmmy on the back, she has no issues with hills and it looks clean still.. but she gets weird looks from those who realise its a track frame.

Sorry missed that question, i live in Newcastle so you guys won't be familiar, it's one of those types of hills that can easily fool you it goes on for ever and gets steeper and steeper until you eventualy die.

+1 bosshog for owning up.
Pentonvile Road on a 75 GI bike isn't easy, especially when your inhaling bus fumes.
In any case HTFU cos thats what we all do :) -

Well... for starters theres the approach to Waterloo Bridge from the south... many a exhausted fat/suited/dayglo biker struggle to reach the summit there.... then, well, erm..... Crystal Palace, there you go, one mother of a hill :P

@ bosshogg
...maybe ditch the ss option get something with gears – get fit then you may even wanna go fixed!
it's supposed to be fun, why kill yourself!

That's what he's trying to do! ;)

I with other here, just spin to win, get a nice low gear and take yer time.
Don't know much about 3 speeders, but surly it would be better with 1 low gear?
Maybe a trials bike? -

BTW, i do have other bikes, i realized a few months ago that i had to do something or i was heading for serious trouble health wise, because of work i have hardley been out on them so thought about going to work on them so i could get the riding time, problem is they will be nicked in 5 mins (i spent a lot on them).
It wasn't until i got back into bikes that i discovered SS/Fixed, i prefer these bikes far more than anything else, i have this mentality that i will get out more on something that i personally think looks good and feels good, maybe a mind thing....I
Before i start getting into my SS build i wanted to see if i could handle it fitness wise, the bike would have been for my commute to work, but sadly after borrowing a mates bike for a couple of days i found that i had seriously under estimated the effort it took/takes to climb the what i thought were slopes and not hills on my way back home.
The next best thing for me i think until i'm fitter is a 3 speed, so question is can you build a 3 speed hub into any rim as long as it has 36 holes (which the 3 speed hub has) or are you limited to your rim selection.
