  • Not to the point of crying you understand

  • I agree, at least in principle, but then again to me jumping a red light during rush hour, and turning left with no pedestrians or traffic about are two different things.

  • I suppose in a sense, but don't think a copper would see it that way

  • Hell no; and I'm by no means suggesting that breaking the law is right, merely that things aren't always black and white.

  • Agreed, still get pissed though when I'm stopped and another cyclist goes straight passed me at the lights

  • Can anyone think of any laws/social conventions that we break in front of others and appear totally unaware of our actions ?

  • Reading the Daily Mail?

People speaking with their mouth full. Special circle of hell for those people.

  • Drinking on the tube. It's totally illegal. Plenty of people do it.

  • It's not illegal. Not sure on the legal jargon but drinking on the tube isn't actually prohibited by law. Which is why they don't put a penalty notice along with the signs. I may be wrong and spouting pub-knowledge though.

  • It is, it only come in effect not long ago in 2008.

    edit - here for reference;

  • Yes, it's banned I understand, but is it illegal. There's a big difference.

  • According to wikipedia it is.

  • Fair point, you can carry them in the tube, just not drink them.

  • That's not what he saying ed., he's stating you can't be arrested for drinking on the tube as it's not illegal. However just like a bar or cafe could, they are can confiscate or tell you to leave.

  • Yeah, what's the actual detail of the law. What sanctions or penalties are imposed for drinking in the tube? Is it a fine, custodial? Does anyone know. Is there legislation. Or did Boris just slap up a bunch of stickers saying no drinking. I'm not a law buff but does a law not need to go through parliament? When did the drinking on public transport bill go through?

I'm not being belligerent by the way, just something I've always been curious about. I have a feeling that although it's more trouble han it's worth drinking on the tube might not be technically illegal.

Any of you Rumpole of the Bailley mothers care to help out?

  • I'm assuming it's one of those railway bye-laws like smoking on a platform.

  • From the TFL site linked by Ed:

TfL intends to implement the policy through a change to the Conditions of Carriage relating to Underground and Bus services

So if you're drinking, your ticket is probably void and they can throw you out. If you refuse you can probably be arrested under one of the railway laws or public order offences.

  • Yeah, that makes sense and much easier to implement than a change or implementing new legislation.

  • I don't think people actually get into a lot of trouble for drinking. I've only ever seen people having it taken off them. I guess if you refused or were an arse about it then they could kick you off, but I don't imagine it ever really happens.
That programme about the tube that was on a while ago showed some people in right states after nights out that were far more of a danger to themselves/others than someone having a cheeky beer on their way somewhere. In a rare show of sense, I think this is the policy the staff operate under.
If you act like an arsehole then expect to be treated like one.

  • About half a dozen bike mounted po-po's just after Oval this morning at around 8am. Guessing they are stopping RLJ-ers up to E&C.

Just on the gap on Kennington Park Road before the left turn to Lambeth north/Kennington Road

  • ^ Stoke Newington Church Street this morning. You might think that the cold would have given clear minds. While one had pulled over a cyclist the other one said, "I will look into it," when I mentioned that the bus in the box might get three points.

  • Tonight: a Boris biker pulled over by a police motorbike on the north side of Waterloo bridge, by the time i walked across the river another* police bike had pulled over another cyclist on the southside on the opposite side of the road.

*Dont think it was the same policeman.
