Police spotting (junction watch)

  • 7 Motorcycle Policemen stopping RLJ's on Kensington High Street, just past the junction with Ken Church St.

Yes I repeat 7 Police hiding in Derry St...

I am not condoning the jumping of Red Lights, but surely the Police have something more pressing to do at 17:45 of a Tue Eve...

    Just Saying

  • Likewise Shepherd's bush and notting hill are being covered. Particularly the roundabout entry from notting hill gate.

  • Also the big junction between bishopsgate and shoreditch high st. Not sure what they're actually up to as they have massive clipboards.

  • This morning around 8am there was about 5-6 police officers at the top junction of commerial street...

  • It's not a problem to use the bike lane, but you can't turn left from the lights at CS7/Princess St - all bikes are supposed to proceed straight over to Ontario Street. The really annoying bit is that since the only northbound traffic in that lane is buses, they could just re-phase the lights to have a safe pedestrian phase, then bikes, then buses. But no, gotta smooth the traffic flow...
I saw 4 people in a row this morning get pulled as they did exactly this left turn. I was waiting at the Northbound lights in the bus lane. Agree it's annoying and is one of the reasons I don't use that part of CS7 and just take on the roundabout instead.

  • My mrs got stopped by them. She crossed the line on amber, waited for some peds to finish crossing and then turned left. She pointed this out and was told to get off and walk round next time.

  • haha, Yep that would be me..

I was having a smoke outside whilst you were remonstrating!

  • top of Bishopsgate, Commercial Street intersection.
    jokers.

  • Motorcycle sheriff was watching Kennigton Tube junction.

Had a nice line of Hi-Vizards lined up for knuckle rapping.

  • load of police on the a3 up to kennigton and there abouts today stopping those naughty red light jumpers.

  • While I have no sympathy for cyclists getting words or a £30 fine for RLJ etc, is anyone else quite concerned about this?

The Met must be pissing away money here while going on about their restricted budget and aren't investigating collisions outside their doorstep (recent discussion on dangerous drivers thread >>>>>>>>>). For example, has anyone see them bust a driver/motorcyclist at one of these crackdowns?

  • Coppers with sniffer dogs used to mount checks at tube stations to catch people with blims or other naughtiness. They just confiscated my grass and didn't even issue a caution. I mean my mate. The cops treat it as a detected crime which boosts their stats and I was free to go about my business. I mean my mate was.

As far as I know Met and COLP aren't measured on traffic offences, it's not one of their rating factors, so it makes you wonder why they allocate resources this way.

  • I'm chuffed to bits that so many police are out there fining cyclists as I'm a firm believer in stopping cyclists breaking traffic rules as a means to getting better treatment from other road users. If you remove that argument, and the orad tax one, other road users don't have a leg to stand on when acting the arse on the roads. There are some utter bell-ends on the road every morning/evening.

On a positive note, a free registration/marking stand was set up just passed Oval tube this morning. Annoyingly I was on the bike I'm selling or I would have hopped off and finally got it done.

Bet they're not there tonight/tomorrow morning.

  • It would be nice if the Police could enforce the law equally- I imagine it must be galling being given a £30 ticket for jumping the red, as the taxi next to you parks firmly in the ASL, having jumped the red...

  • Oh totally. Absolutely.

My point is that if cyclists can be the better group, it'll change people's attitudes. And then (hopefully) the resources can be moved onto the shite drivers.

  • I can't prove it but I think if every cyclist in London obeyed every traffic law it wouldn't make a scrap of difference to the attitudes of those who resent and bully people on bikes.

  • Yeah but it would give them one less stick to beat cyclists with, so they could be rightly called cunts without a response lined up.

  • I don't even get this collective responsibility, if a car driver attacked me because OTHER cyclists jump reds I'd say "Why should I listen to a car driver- you lot killed Diana".

  • Understand the logic, but at the end of the day cyclists/ car drivers are both people...
It all boils down to trying to get somewhere quicker, if all cyclists were saints that wouldn't change car drivers doing stupid things to get somewhere quicker. Same thing the other way round.
Key is either enforcing the law more firmly, penalising those who are more likely to cause death or injury first (car drivers), or creating awareness that driving/ cycling recklessly effectively only saves a minuscule amount of time.
    Neither will ever happen.

    Oh totally. Absolutely.

My point is that if cyclists can be the better group, it'll change people's attitudes. And then (hopefully) the resources can be moved onto the shite drivers.

  • It would be nice if the Police could enforce the law equally- I imagine it must be galling being given a £30 ticket for jumping the red, as the drivers next to you shyly texting on their mobile phone...

    fixed.

  • It's not really fixed though is it Ed, as in my example both parties were doing the same thing- hence the comparison.

In your version the cyclist would have just been given a ticket for texting whilst riding.

  • Equally in the sense that RLJing is as common as texting/calling while driving (of which is every two to five minutes).

  • I don't even get this collective responsibility, if a car driver attacked me because OTHER cyclists jump reds I'd say "Why should I listen to a car driver- you lot killed Diana".

Actually going to start saying that.

  • ...stickers needed "car driver - you lot killed Diana"

  • That's a brilliant comeback, especially in the heart of the daily mailer.
