  • Is it true that you can only lace up snowflakes with straight gauge spokes, as double-butted are too stiff? I heard this the other day.

  • i doubt that as butted spokes wether single or double butted will have material taken away ?

  • my old one was built with double butted spokes.

  • Cheers for the responses.

Yeah, thought I'd have heard about it before if it was really the case, since I'm an expert "armchair wheelbuilder".

  • I used to have a twisted front wheel on my Rossin-conversion... it seemed to really tighten-up the handling.

  • Seasonal wheels: ya have to love 'em. I slapped this one together, and rode it to West drinks- seems to be staying straight...

28, 2 cross, 2 double twists, extra 5mm on spocalc lengths, works fine!

32 on the back, 3 cross, ditto.

  • Nearly finished my new build and wanted to try snowflake lacing also.

So, I've just asked Condor to lace up my new Phil Wood hubs and Campag Omega V's as snowflake on the back. And then radial laced on the front...

    1. Does anyone advise against this? EG, Will the back wheel will be weak for this, so total waste of time? Brick lane reckon any twists are weak and should be braised / welded at the twist...

    2. Is radial weak on the front?

  • Radial is fine at the front. Almost standard on high end roadies these days...

Snowflake at the back? Why not? I've not seen it done though...

check the dave yates with the spinergy ----^

  • Snowflake front: No thanks.
    Radial Front: No thanks

    Snowflake Rear: I'd rather walk.

  • i used to have a snowflake rear.
works fine..... looks dumb as shit though..... especially on an Omega V.

  • wtf twists are weak....if by twist you mean bend. the most extreme bend on the spoke it at the head, it is just bent 90deg when making so the bends from a snoflake pattern are not oing to weaken the spokes. welding together? wtf? that would reender any truing attempt even moe useless. but they are not as strong as normal wheels.

    1. Is radial weak on the front?

radial is fine on front, only bad point is as the spoke pull straight out from the hub, there is an increased chance the flange will rip off, but thi is not really a worry for a quality large flange hub. and they dont give a harsher ride

  • ...and they are more prone to going out of true, don't have such lateral stiffness and if they are in an impact you have a greatly increased chance of needing a new wheel rather than a re-true.

    Why bother? Just go 3x.
Particularly if using really soft (non-street-worthy) Omegas.

  • Snowflakes fine, I haven't had mine on for long, but after a few re-tensions etc, they seem OK- no creaking. I am a bat fastard so you'll prolly be fine. Didn't have high expectations of these, so pleasantly surprised.

mine are 28 front, 2 cross and rear 32 3 cross both with 2 double twists.

    Wow!

My 3x F+R Phils were perfect after 18 months with no re-tensions or anything, despite being crashed, sandwiched between a bus and a coach and I'm 13.5 stone.

  • They look better than a Arrojoke.

wheel building is all about gaining and keeping good, even, spoke tension, snowflake makes this very hard. Snowflakes wheels are weaker.

yah, its what i said. the bend in the spoke does not weaken the spoke, the lacing pattern does weaken the wheel.

  • Can't believe you wanted snowflakes wheels Harry, even back in the day. The shame of it...

  • Dan: I never did.

Golver: Do shut up you pathetic prick.

  • Bay City Lollers

  • Snowflake laced wheels are fucking ridiculous in my humble, irrelevant opinion. What a pain in the arse way to make great wheel weak and ugly. Remind me, what is the benefit? To be wacky?
