I read through just a few of the 24 pages and found out that ATACs rule them all. Skidding without unclipping, longer lasting cleats and I don't have to do the duck walk.
Why should anyone ever go for Look/SPD-SL apart from looking more pro?
I'm totally new to this side of riding bikes and want to spend some money. Not lots, just some. -

Depends on the riding you're going to do. Generally stiffer sole on road shoes which is a lot more comfortable over longer distances, and a larger contact area between pedal-cleat-shoe which again aids comfort. And you can learn to not walk to badly in SPD-SL, I used to run up stairs in mine.
But mtb is good for other uses

Mainly long distances. For commuting I still have normal pedals with toe clips or my beater.
So now I'm at the beginning of decision making again. -

SPD-SLs are better than atacs at everything apart from actually riding off road, and egg beaters are better at that

I'm yet to find d a problem with SPDs for all types of riding...

also never had a problem with SPDs.
The only issue is difficult to find good road shoes in SPD fitment. So I briefly tried Time RXS - they were awful. Now using SPD-SL - so far so good.

SPD-SL is winning right now as I don't plan to commute clipless. Are there any forum favourites regarding pedals and shoes?

Where are you based? I have a pair of old ultegra SPD-SL which realistically I'm not going to use, but are probably going to be better than anything below current ultegra level. With SPD-SL you want reasonably high level, so that the pedal hangs nicely for you to kick into when you're engaging
Shoes is a really personal thing; focus on getting something that fits you well, best bet is to go to a shop and try out different brands at least to work out what their sizing is like

Germany. I might be interested though :)
How important is it to buy shoes a bit bigger than I usually wear? I've read that feet swell but doesn't that apply to regular street shoes, too?
-

Size is hard to quantify - it should absolutely apply the same as street shoes - but how many times are you walking solidly for 4-5 hours (i.e. a long bike ride). But that said I don't think you need to size up necessarily, just be aware that you may need to adjust as you go

SPD-SL and a pair of cleat covers from Wiggle for £4 ; you can run upstairs and the cleats last forever

I assumed the reason Atacs were better than SPD for fixie lords was the the sprung bar is at the front of atac, rear of SPD, so less likely to pull your cleat out when wrenching your massive leg-guns into sick skidz.
Road cleats are great for riding but shite for drinking. falling over in the pub is always hilarious though.

Well, I'm about to order R550 pedals and Fizik R5B Uomos, they are the best looking in the range of 150€, hah! Same size as I wear my Vans should be cool, right?

Go up a half size at least; R5Bs are tiggghhht.

Well, this happened. Super bargain.

Thanks to @5115_Pete i now have a pair of Sidi road shoes, but im unsure of what cleat to buy. Will any three bolt system work ? look /shimano/ brand X
I have shimano spd sl pedals. sidi s-pro shoes, looking at these, but what does "fixed" mean.
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-sh10-cleats/rp-prod28894New to clipless and im slightly confused as to what cleast went with what pedal and shoe system.

Play it safe and go for the yellow SH11 6deg float cleat. Wiggle also do their own version of this clear which is about 1/3 of the price and seems to get decent reviews

Any opinions on Look S-Tracks for brakeless? Need to buy new pedals and shoes anyway so i'm considering switching to clipless
-

My left (dominant leg) ATAC has started squeaking - I think they are worn and rubbing against the sole of my SIDIs and need replacing. Are these the ones to go for these days? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/time-atac-xc6-pedals/rp-prod95071
Or should I try an other pedal system that would be compatible with SIDI Dominator?
I'm not riding brklzz or 'owt...

I'm erring towards SPD for my girl's first foray into clipless but also have ATAC pedals and cleats. Any reason to use ATAC for a noob rather than SPD?

• #599
dunno cos never ridden ATAC but i'm thinking of going back to SPDs for the Isen, if i ever manage to get it built up.

I started with ATACs and didn’t die. So I’d say it’s ok, if that counts as a recommendation?
Single sided shimano touring spd are great, not an issue to get clipped in at all (also, learn to track stand a little?)
M520 I've found ok, definitely not as secure as time atac but cheap and cleats last a long time. With atac I feel 100% secure if brakeless, with shimano about 80%. I've also popped out of the m520 when sprinting and pulling up.
