Cheers lemonade! The pedals look ideal, and yeah "synthetic leather" is a fancy way of saying plastic, ha ha. The shoes look alright but I might have a look around for something more "wintery" because a lot of the reviews say they're well ventilated, which isn't ideal now it's getting colder.

^^ good grief that's cheap! Might be worth a punt for £12, even if they do look aaaaaawful, ha ha.

i think cycling shoes are definitely worth paying a bit extra for. my pair lasted three years of daily use but unfortunately died at the weekend :(

Hmmm I don't know. I've been rocking a £15 pair of Aldi 'Crane' numbers for the last 5 years with no problems. They are heavy though.
If you really really squint they look more expensive. These:

i think mine were hastened to death by skidding too much, have pulled the base plate off

Those super cheap ones are only available in teeny sizes and the £25 one's I'd probably rather spend a little bit more to get something a bit nicer.

I went clipless for the first time last week, I have time atac aliums and shimano shoes. Everything as good, I have not fallen off yet (touch wood) but yesterday they unclipped when I was in front of a bus about to skid, that scared the shit out of me but I assumed it was a one off.
I went for a ride today and my pedals unclipped 3 times :/ Once on oxford street causing me to nearly fall into a taxi with an open door, once by my mates house and then the last time was beside the canal, I came very close to falling off.
All were the front foot (the pull up one) when doing skids.
I think this might have something to do with the massive ratio I've had to run these past few days.
Anyone got any other ideas on what it may be? -
• #359
tighten them?
-
• #360
don't twist your ankle when you pull up.
-
• #361
If you can't tighten the tension (I don't think you can with aliums) swap the cleats around, it makes them loads harder to clip out of.
-
• #362
hehe did you almost fall into canal?

this
I doubt it's the ratio, they're really difficult to just pull straight out of. I've unclipped a few times but I was either drunk or doing something stupid and twisted my foot.
also someone (TM?) pointed out that if you change the cleats over so you have to twist further out to unclip, then you might be more likely to unclip inwards and a lot of people are more likely to twist their foot that way when skidding...

I kinda whip when I skid, maybe that but I really think it's my ratio!
It's bloody massive, need I change it before my knees are fucked.
One of the times was just a straight skid, I know how much I need to twist my door to get out and I definitely didn't twist that far when I skidded.
I might try swapping the cleets but I can see it making it worse, like not managing to un clip at the lights or I clipping when my foot twists inwards. -

I just bought a pair of time atac pedals from Apollo because they were a good price. Going to keep my eyes peeled for a cheap pair of shoesies. Never tries clipless before, I predict falling over a lot.

is my current combo, and it's working out brilliantly so far, and about as cheap as it gets.
I can recomend those shoes too, they are pretty cold now but a good pair of socks sorts that out.
I started off with some old richney MTB pedals that i hated but lucky got some XTs of here for super cheap and i love them -

Also i've held those Sports direct ones in store and they don't feel like they'd last a month of brakeless skid riding and are seriously heavy

Need to get a new road pedals for my dad's, was going for a trusty LOOK pedals, but the Mavic one caught my eyes and does look good with his frame, worth going for or stick to the LOOK?

Looking at new road pedals myself. My Look Keo 2 max have developed bearing play on the NDS. Reading around the interwebs revealed that its not a uncommon problem with them. Although I suspect a search into most pedal would come up with simlar stuff.
Looked into the Mavics, cuz they look cool, and function much the same. General word seems to be bomb proof pedal, with cleat made of cheese.
I've decided to go with some Keywins, as I like the idea of a big platform, and the road bike is a weenie project. So the light weight is good too.

i use these

light, adjustable float, strong, can walk on cleats easy enough, and look cool (most important).

The i-Clicks keep tempting me. But the Keywins seem to tick more boxes for less monies.

the iclics are shit compared to the rxs.

But they haz more carbon. This cant be true.
Defo getting the Keywins anyway. They sound brilliant.
Lighter.
bigger platform.
Float at axle/pedal connection, not cleat/pedal connection. So less wear/play.
Availible in 6 different axle lengths.
Low stack height.

Speedplays do all this (apart from axle float thing) , look nicer and are double sided. Job done

i always wanted to try some speedplays but the 4 screw cleat has always turned me off. and also that all the mechanics are in the cleat so you shouldn't really walk on them.
someone posted these super cheap shoes on another thread
