Look I am a staunch defender of the Holy Roman Empire nor an Christian apologist (whatever that is as I am not really sure what Christians have to apologise for) and just think that people should not be deliberately insensitive to other peoples beliefs.

Tynan, it is not about deference, it is about common decency and not saying things that can hurt other peoples feelings. You wouldn't dream of making racist comments in a public forum so why do you consider it acceptable to make comments offensive to Christians.
I consider it acceptable to speak my mind on religion as freely as I find it acceptable to speak my mind on racism. I will not hold back if my views clash with those of a BNP campaigner because of any sense of 'common decency', I will tell him what I think of his views as readily as I will tell a Calvinist what I think of his malevolent nonsense.
The reason I took offence is because my wife is a Christain and I know that that she would be offended by this. You argument is basically I can say what I want because offence is not the same as hurt well try telling that to someone on the receiving end of racial abuse.
So, if I tell a Christian that I think his ideas are nonsense this is akin to racism ?
I can't speak for every race that has been exploited or persecuted, but I think when fate was being dealt out (presumably by the Judeo-Christian god) the millions of African's headed for slavery would have happily swapped all that for an afternoon with me telling them that their cargo cult is nonsense.
My advice to Christians would have to be HTFU. If their philosophy is so precarious, so delicate and frail, so unable to shoulder criticism, this should give them pause to wonder why.

the Grimms Brother, and the Bible?
The Brothers Grimm do not sanction rape, genocide, the humiliation, torture and killing of homosexuals, slavery, patricide, genocide, misogyny, human sacrifice and so on. And if the Brothers Grimm ever do get out of hand they at least let the whole thing end at death, unlike Jesus' gift to us all in his sequel 'The New testement' where even the most wretched of his creations do not have their horror muted of death, oh no, this is when the real fun starts. More importantly the readers of the Brothers Grimm do not believe any of it to be reality.

I think Tynan sees Religion as very different to "race". It simply a way of thinking and a bunch of ideas people choose to believe, so as with any other opinions/beliefs a group of people have, they are open for criticism.
I'd say that was a pretty decent summation of my view.

But you, of course, would be insensitive to a racists beliefs would you not ?
A racist walks up to you and says "This fucking country needs to get these Paki bastards out" - what do you do, remain silent, let him have his view and not challenge it, remain sensitive to his ideas, not offend him ? . . . or do you tell him that you disagree ?

Like many things in life though tyan it's as much about how you go about doing as what you do. By all means challenge the belief systems. Ask awkward questions which challenge people to think but an overly aggressive approach will cause instant wall to go up against anything that is said. If you come across unreasonable in the sense of the language you use (for example) in your presentation of your argument no matter how well formed and logical many people will will not be receptive to what you wish to say.

Tynan you were telling me that offense and hurt were not the same thing so I used race to illustrate that offensive words can indeed be hurtful however lets be clear as I did not draw any moral equivalence between racism and criticism of religious beliefs. I do not believe that religion should be above crictism but then I do not believe that the statement "Jesus is a cock" is legitimate criticism. Religious prejudice whatever which way you want to dress it up is still prejudice and historically has led crimes equally as henious as those justified on the basis of race. I wonder if your prejudice extends just towards Christians or does it extend to all religions?

That's fine ! Honestly ! :)
If these people want to debate on this issues then they will, if they want to play the offense card at the first opportunity they will and often do. I don't mind either way, my initial post ask no questions, invites no debate, I am simply putting my view over.
Their is no appetite for honest and robust debate about their ideas amongst Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus.
to ed:
budda, is trying to say tynan is being as indecent as a racist by harshly critisicing religion.
