  • Hi,

Everytime I want to look something up that is talked about in this forum I scramble together information from various sites. Sheldon Brown has a lot but the look of the site is really dated.

Wouldn't it be cool to have one really comprehensive modern wiki that has everything you need to know about bike fixing and building (not just FG and SS)?

Does anyone know about a really good wiki or encylopedia? I googled around but the results haven't been promising. I'm thinking about putting up a site myself and I am wondering if I should rather put my energy into an existing project.

    Cheers
    Lenni

Site looks down at the moment though?

  • I hope for your own safety you are not dissing Sheldon's site?
You may be hunted down and killed for such heresy.

  • Thing is Sheldon's site may just be Basic HTML but it is very well organised and it's easy to find everything on it. Most sites that are all phped up to the max are not that well organised so I can only see a wiki being a copy of Sheldon's site, prob not as well organised but with a pretty background.

    I repent! I repent!

  • So you admit it?

  • wikis are really dated

I have understood that the error of my judgement and will ... hang on... there are a few guys with burning torches knocking on the door... be right back.

  • i think the wiki is an excellent idea
sheldons site in my opinion is messy and very outdated (he is a hero and i mean this with respect)

maybe the wiki should be made in his name?
i ran a wiki a while ago for an old art project and its was fun, lot of work though

    My god you're alive. +

  • FixieFaqs certianly covers just about everything technical you would want to know about fixies but, as the name suggests, that's were it hits its limits.

There is no dedicated site that encompasses all things cycling in the style of wikipedia. By all means go ahead and try. However, I would caution you to exercise a lot of control over such a site. Anyone trying even the simplist of organisation of cyclists will assure you that it's like herding cats.

However, this is untrue, it's like herding cats on ketamine and PCB with guns and knives for hands and castors for feet whilst someone else is opening a tin of cat food.

Ha, have some reputation points for that one.

  • You're taking it very well though.

  • sorry, i thought you said flaming

    Lenni,

In LA we've been quietly working on a project - the ibikeu Wiki - a Wiki intended to document all bike related topics. It's still young, but you're welcome to use it to document bike repair.

Additionally, there is the Wikipedia Cycling Project, which organizes efforts on cycling related wikipedia entries, a now defunct cycling wiki (Bicycling Wiki), and another defunct cycling wiki (Cycling at Wikia.)

    So, there are some options.
