  • Witcomb do a frame building course , I don't think £1250 is too bad considering you get a custom frame out of it at the end, plus the experience.

  • I'm Spartacus (and confused)

  • thanks for the links hippy. is that actually nimbus from here?
and are you the hippy that little fish talks about?

joys of being an engineer and draftsman and having a father who is a welder by trade (as well as a plumber, carpenter etc.) means i've got expereince of designing, jig building and brazing already which makes it a bit easier. next to think about which lugs and tubing.

I'm pretty sure it's not nimhbus from here. Basing that on the missing 'h' I am.
Yes, I am the same hippy who loves/loved downtube shifters.
I would suggest doing a lot of reading on the framebuilder forums/mailing list first and sussing out what exactly you'd like to build.

  • With so many options on the market i wouldn't even bother, really.

Just try to find out how many hours it gonna take you to finish it, plus the costs buying material, then multiply by, hmm, £6 or £7 per hour? ;)

  • it's not about money though. it's about riding something you can say is yours and you built it. i've been building my own bikes for years but never the frame. it's the next logical step to get away from "OTP".

  • Me as well, only once i bought a complete bike with stock parts in a shop... but still have no plans to build my own frame.

But anyway best of luck, please post a picture here when finished.

    Have u seen this website - http://framebuilding.com?

They have loads of cool stuff for sale and it's UK based i think

    +1
I looked into this about 18 month / two years ago did loads of research and even did a evening course in welding / brazing to get some tuition. The problem just came down do work shop space in London and having to hire gas bottles off of BOC for some ridiculous amount meaning for the amount I was going to use them the cost would be crazy. If you can get round these two issues I don't think it is that hard to do if you're a practical person. Workshop space has always been the biggest issue for me.

Also check out http://www.frameforum.org/portal/index.php but from my experience the phread frame building mailing list is better. Search the archives too.

I have loads of other links to stuff I found out on another computer with guides for jigless building techniques (including good alignment methods not requiring a massive bit of marble) cheap / easy ways to build jigs, brazing techniques (including hearth techniques), suppliers (many are from the US but will ship) e.t.c When I'm next on that computer I'll dig them out for you.

  • thanks thats great. i already have access to a jig board so shouldn't have to many issues. i'm sure it will most likely never happen but i may still do the planning just incase.
yes boc are stupidly expensive for hiring but as my dad has them already for his business that makes it alot more practical.
