So therefore, a chain DOES stretch with use and time.

The plates are not the chain, but only part of the chain. These plates (apparently) do not stretch, but its the wear that occurs to the pins, bushings, and rollers that cause the "stretch" that is witnessed.

Sounds fair to me.

The effect of wear, on the rollers and the chainring/sprocket teeth, will mean you need to adjust tension, even if the chain was the same length when measured. But rivet wear will result in a longer chain. Otherwise this would be a crap tool....

i disagree.
the pins and bushes wear yes, and the bushes end up loose on the worn pins. but they are internal and would not make the outside longer.

No it doesn't. You could add 4 new links to a new chain and it's now longer without any stretching. "stretch" infers some kind of deformation (elastic or otherwise). In this case chains do not stretch they wear.

No it doesn't. You could add 4 new links to a new chain and it's now longer without any stretching. "stretch" infers some kind of deformation (elastic or otherwise). In this case chains do not stretch they wear.
