drill a 5mm hole in the bottom of the bottom bracket, and when ever you change the b/b squirt a load of wd40 in there, you can get stuff called Framesaver, which does a good job, but not sure where from.
recently tried to search for it....no joy. -

shake some thick motor oil around inside the frame. Or waxoyl.

take your bike down to a car spray shop. they should have a shultz gun. this can be placed against one of the bottle cage holes and sprayed. it atomizes a waxoyl ike substance which will stick to the internal suface of the tube. this can be done on any tube which is open to the elements (i.e has a hole in it like the down tube or stays) you should be able to do it from the head tube aswell for the top tube.

Just pour some HTFU into the seat tube and voila. Rust free.

Had a freak ceiling leak above the place where i had left my freshly powder coated frame.
Didn't realise until now that there are patches of light rust (like you get on your wok if you haven't oiled it properly) inside the down tube and bottom bracket hole. Was reading another post which recommended rust prevention techniques, but what about if there is rust there already. I can't reach the stuff deep inside so what should i do? Will it be a problem anyway? should i just WD40/oil the whole of the inside of the frame and leave it be?
any ideas?

anything like that will do, even rub an oily rag on the bits you can reach.

It's most probably only surface rust.

spray a load of wd40 in there, build the bike up and dont worry about it.
Bikes frames are designed to allow moisture to flow through. They have little holes for it to escape/evaporate.
It wont do any harm unless parts like the BB & chainstay junction is actually flooded for a long period of time.

proper rust takes weeks of repeated exposure to water or continious, London's acid rain is probably your worst enemy.

I just got an old frame that had a load of rust on the top tube and a little in other areas. I have srubbed the frame and the rust off, but now the gloss (and I guess any coating) has now been removed. I am not bothered about a glossy finish appearance, and will not be repainting. But I do want to prevent rust. Would covering the paint stripped areas be enough, or will the whole frame need coating? Could that be a matte coating?

The best option would be to sand the whole frame down and paint (or spray) it with Hammerite or Rust-o-leum. They also do matte coatings. Wouldn't just do the rusted bits though, you've probably damaged the rest of the paint too, so a new coating is the best option.

If you want to keep the look of an old frame and the original decals etc give the frame a really good clean down with an alcohol based cleaning product (glass & mirror cleaner). When clean and dry get a couple of cans of spray on lacquer and spray evenly in loads of thin coats allowing for drying times between each coat.
Won't be perfect but it's certainly a cheap option that retains the original paintwork (and it's less desirable to thieves) whilst protecting the exposed frame from the elements.

Thanks for the options. I have bought some spray paint. I went for Plasti-Kote Rust Off. Hopefully that should do the job. I plan to do the whole frame.

decided that i want to take it back to the metal and leave it. but obviously going to need some rust proofing layer. any recommendations?
thought about autosol, tried it before and it worked for a while but i want something more permanent.
(i'm also pretty impatient/ skint so sending it away is prolly not going to happen)
cheers

So, I found some water in my frame the other day. It's not a great deal, but it has made me think about rust proofing my frame. I've bought some Hammerite anti-rust paint, but other than painting the inside of the BB shell, lower section of the seat tube, etc, what can I do to prevent frame rust?
Is it worth me plugging the welding holes or might I cause extra problems with water not being able to evaporate out of them?
