  • LPG, that's not a real zanimal! And I wouldn't want a jumper made of that hair.

  • The alpaca is the one on the left

  • what about this one?

  • this thread has completely gone wrong.

It used to be about a girl who wanted to know about single speed bikes, then turned into a feminist battle, covered some knitting and now features the weirdest animals on earth.

    Love it!

  • @lpg, looks like it's eaten a cat

  • Aaaagh!
I am going to be hunted down and run over by a peleton of women on single-speeds!

Sorry to my sister cyclists for inadvertantly causing offence - but thanks again to cg5154, veevee, velocityboy, van uden, and the others (bros and sis) others who understood where I was coming from.

    And - to confirm - it is not a set-up - I really am a woman.

And, I am proud to say am also a feminist and have been since before 1979 when I recognised (age 11) the significance of the just-emerged feminist classics "I will survive" and Margaret Thatcher (not).

My 30 years of feminist thought have led me to understand that men and women, whilst being equal, are different. That does not mean that all men and women conform to the norm - but that general patterns can be discerned that many do conform to.

    Long live equality!
    Long live difference!

I think it is now time for me to change my name, and retire from public life.

The streets are just too dangerous for me.

  • Good lord, what a bonkers animal!

please don't call my girlfriend an animal...

  • VeeVee: knitting rocks!

I made a wild emergency monkey after I lost my four year old's favourite animal.

And, it's not just a female pursuit - think of Kaffe Fassett, David Bowie and teh Bishop of somewhere or the other

  • @Julio, Minh Ai, a girl is asking for some simple advice and you have been attacking her on a pointless issue instead of sharing your views. You could have told her how much you enjoy riding fixed and how you went about getting your bikes etc...

I have no interest in building bikes, getting the shiniest parts etc... I have a limited knowledge on how bikes work, I'm learning bit by bit but not that really interested. I don't drool on cogs, chains and pedals but I'm glad some people do so they can help me if I have a question.

    @CG5154, your post was excellent.

OK got to go as I need to knit some merino for winter.

Errr, at the risk of being sexist, racist, and everything elsist including being an uncaring male bastard. tombola's comment about 'was it just a boy-thing' struck me as fairly typical of very English (sexless) self-deprecating humour...

yes, i could have been more positive and i would have been if i responded to her original quote but i was responding to the language she used in her second quote and how i interpreted it (VanUden - if trambolize's comment was meant to be humorous then this did not translate to me). it's not a pointless issue and i'm not attacking anyone. much like your response to my comment, i'm merely expressing my astonishment and opinion about something i'd read and i'm not writing for the sake of being bitchy but rather to question her stereotypical views because i believed it needed to be addressed. if opinions aren't expressed then questions would never be raised and views would never be changed and we would just carry on in our own narrow minded little bubbles (a generalisation - not an attack on trambolize!).

trambolize - i didn't mean to cause offense and i hope you get a bike and ride tall and proud and not give a fuck what anyone else thinks because it's the most fun you'll have getting from A to B and thats worth more than any embarrassment you might feel about being involved in a 'boys' activity. plus i know nothing about bikes either - as with most things, you leave it up to the pro's (but if you want to learn, you can).

  • LPG, that is bloody Heroic.
    haha.

  • Concerning Alpacas:

    large
    med
The two above are just better quality of below:

  • Hello minh ai

I didn't mean that ss or fixed gear was only for men, but really s'pose I meant is it a geeky techie thing to do with being into components, rather than riding a bike.

"boy's thing" very much in quotation marks.

However, it is refreshing to have a debate about feminism as it seems to have gone out of fashion in recent years. Like the last 180: bring back George Elliot

  • On order!
I normally use 2.0mm or 3.0mm needles for merino, depending on thin you would like your beret. 2.00mm would be better I think.

I just got myself a new Addi Turbo aluminium pair of needles. They're circular. It is a bit hard to use first but once you get the hang of it it's amazing.

This is what I mean, beautiful hey!

For the mittens, I'm thinking alpaca, check how fine and soft it is...

chica!! those needles are RAD! someday when i can do more that knit one pearl one I'll be covetting those...
    that animal is just bizzzzzare.

  • ok ok I admit, I don't knit. I used to once upon a time... But I love wool (and alpacas)! *

I am really confused. Before I read this thread, I thought I was a man. Now I am not sure. My thighs are quite slender and feminine. My calves are big. My buttocks are powerful.

  • Spokeman, go back to reading boys stuff, nothing to see here ;)

    go on click here

  • How about if I reverse the position of the front and rear gears? I think it would look rad.

    Has anyone done it.

Hi Vee Vee, could you do me a wooly cold weather hat?

    PM me for the cost.

PS as long as you drop the volume on the hoover whilst I'm watchin TV, there wont be any trouble!!!

    cheers

  • but really s'pose I meant is it a geeky techie thing to do with being into components, rather than riding a bike.

the biggest irony is that on a fixie, you only need a few handful of components, also when it come to singlespeed/fixie, it's all about enjoying the ride, not the bike.

that's what differ us from those roadie/MTB where equipment is really important to them.

  • my misses rides a black IRO single speed. Uses it a lot but as a bike, she just wanted a nice looking bike that rides well.
The whole forum thing does tend to be a bloke hobby! also along with ebay! collecting loads of parts that you have to hide! and buying more bikes than you need! (how many bikes can you ride? they take up to much room! they mark the walls!) equally large sets of speakers and cables that look a mess!! also drive my misses crazy......... i won't go in to her annoying habits!!

  • Does your missus like alpaca?

  • oh yes. she certainly does.
