I would be highly surprised if these folks really knew how to ride safe in traffic

There is alot more to it than wearing an orange anorak and stopping at the traffic lights

    Weird statement....

  • I don't think the trainer could keep up with me, I go like a mad ferret down the Old Kent Road.

    I'm joking...

you can race with Mashton once he's become a trainer ;) you might not get a gold star though....

  • I was reading that bloke from the Guardian the communist geezer he went on one of those training rides and for the first time in thirty years he got taught not to hug the curb I could not believe what I was reading this was the geezer telling us lot how to do it they are probably pretty good those training rides but I reckon most couriers or ex-couriers would tell you the way to do it proper safe which ain't always the legal way hence the comment about the anoraks capice

  • Is there such a thing as cycling school ? teach people how to ride safe

^^This is what you asked. We provided replies. But you already knew all the answers.
There is another thread on cycling training if you want to add your comments.

  • yeah not appropriate here not when someone got hurt like that I'll button it

  • Do we know for a fact, though that this was caused by someone undertaking a lorry. If this is the case then this is a very sad, yet completely avoidable accident. The only time I would ever undertake a lorry is when it is stopped at a very red light and nowhere near any side turning. Seriously. Don't fucking do it!

**A CYCLIST was rushed to hospital yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) with injuries to her legs after colliding with a lorry.
**The woman in her 40s hit a timber lorry in Royal College Street, Camden Town.
Clothes and bicycle parts could be seen strewn across the street behind police cordons. A paramedic team arrived by helicopter and took the cyclist to Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel by ambulance.
A police spokesman said the woman was in a “serious” condition last night.
Kingsley Okolie, 22, a shop assistant at nearby Cash Converters, said: “Her legs were just shattered. I wanted her to lie down but she just sat bolt upright in shock. All of a sudden she just lay down and all her muscles were twitching.”
Mr Okolie looked on as paramedics carried out two resuscitation attempts.
He said since road works started a few months ago he had seen a number of “near misses”.
The works are intended to make the road safer according to Camden Cycling Campaign member, John Chamberlain, who lives in Highgate Road, in Dartmouth Park.
“Obviously we don’t know what happened but these junctions are notorious for these types of accidents where cyclists are proceeding straight on and lorries are turning left,” he said.
“It again illustrates the vulnerability of cyclists particularly to heavy goods vehicles. Our thoughts are with the victim and her family.”

  • shit.
sounds like it could be undertaking accident then. hope she recovers ok.
i'm moving up that way next week, so i'll have to watch out by those roadworks.
    ride safe people.

  • sad news. take care out there everyone. :(

  • "Is there such a thing as cycling school ? teach people how to ride safe"

"Actually you can undertake if there is pavement space and you know how to mount a curb properly the real killer is undertaking by the railings = no way out"

so did you get abducted by aliens and have your brain messed with in between typing those 2 posts.
that's the kind of get there asap i'm so important attitude that gets cyclists involved in accidents.
you want other road users to look out for you, use their mirrors, and peds to not step out in the road etc yet you advocate riding on the pavement?

  • shit, that sounds nasty.
Almost saw someone get taken out by a bendy bus this morn on the OKR.
Bus sped up to overtake an old timer riding fairly slowly then swung in sharply to stop at a bus-stop giving the guy no room at all - I looked back to see the guy had mounted the kerb riding through the crowd of people waiting for the bus.
All the bus-driver had to do was wait for maybe 10 seconds whilst the guy passed the stop. Dickhead.

  • Again with the 'cyclist hits lorry' bullshit. What the fuck is that all about? How about there was a collision between a cyclist and lorry?

  • how a bout a lorry faild to yeild to a cyclist who had right of way.

  • there are two consecutive intersections on that road that split into 2 lanes, where one goes left and one goes right. cyclists continue to hug the curb then try to go straight. people should ride on the road not in the gutter, otherwise cars won't give you room.

  • how a bout a lorry faild to yeild to a cyclist who had right of way.
not necessarily so. plus if he can't see her what can you do. although noticed alot more van drivers checking there inside mirror, i always hang back at intersections just in case.

agreed we have all seen what timid cycling gets you in hospital, or worse.

    '

turning vehicals yeild to ones going straight on no?

  • But not ones that have crept up from behind into their blindspot.

  • agreed we have all seen what timid cycling gets you in hospital, or worse.

Cycling aggressively and dominating the road is the only true safe way to cycle in London. If you are cycling on average faster than any other vehicles then you are far less likely to be involved in a crash, and road users will not generally, try anything funny with you.

This is a lot easier said than done though. Most people on this forum are experienced cyclists. But new cyclists, or those who are afraid, think it is perfectly acceptable to poodle along in the gutter at 5mph undertaking all and sundry. Little do they realise they are the ones far more likely to get taken out by lorries, pedestrians, opening car doors and general piss takers.

However, how do you go someone the confidence to cycle in the centre of the road and take no shit from anyone. Its not easy, I guess its just down to experience?

  • Maybe assertively rather than aggressively?

  • stupid thing is that the new layout of that intersection is more open, possibly giving cyclists more percieved room.

  • Maybe assertively rather than aggressively?

yeah. Assertively. But also defensively to a certain extent to. Aggresive defensive if there is such a thing. Everytime I see a car or whatever at a junction etc I expect they are going to pull out and try and be ready for it

  • But not ones that have crept up from behind into their blindspot.

    Blind**spot **is a misnomer - it's a huge amount of space - a constantly shifting deathzone...

  • shit, that sounds nasty.

That makes me want to murder when I see it or it happens to me. Literally murder. I've got on to buses before and the driver generally claims ignorance. They just don't give a shit.

  • [probably sexist] It does often seem to be women who get hurt in these situations. I guess they are less likely to be assertive on the road, but it is worrying how often it is a woman killed or hurt.
