this all sounds far too complicated! i just use ...
... it, seems like unnecessary faff to me. I just ...
I find it hilarious that there are people who put down others' recommendations as too much hassle. And then move onto claim that they "just" do so and so, which happens to be a two- or three step process just as laborious as everyone elses.

I'm ready to make the step away from the LBS 2 quid oil and will therefore resurrect a year old thread.
So 'clean ride' for example, does that mean I will get less shit on my trousers or will it give me a cleaner chain but with more shit coming off?
What should I choose when my priority is less dirt coming off the chain? ..... I might attract some generic HTFU replies, but thing is at times life requires that you don't follow the whole fakenger look.
I use Clean Ride. I'm finding myself needing to reapply it after a couple of days work but I really like the stuff. Maybe it's just this weather.
But yeah, one thing I've noticed since using it is my chain has not a single sign of rust on it. I dunno if that's normal but I know a lot of people with rusty chains.

Every couple of days? Days? Are you made of money? My chain isn't rusty either and it's coated in cooking oil. Dear me. What do you wipe your saddle with? An ermine rag? Save your money young Max. No one likes a courier with a shiny chain anyway; makes you look like you're slumming it.

Still using it, but in this weather it goes solid. You have to put it in your trouser pocket while you clean the bike, then when that's done it's halfway melted. Still came out like PVA glue tonight though.

I don't actually wax my chain every couple of days. Thats how long it takes to dry out and become noisy again though, which is usually an indication it needs some lubrication and TLC.
I hate talking about bike maintenance it bores the shit out of me at the moment.
And I am most definitely not made of money. Quite the opposite, which is, erm, not.

My chain cleaning routine for last year was, don't touch chain, ride approx. 10k miles, end up with about 2cm of chain stretch. Might actually clean my new one once in a while as the difference when I put it on was ridiculous

I dislike wax lubes.

No they aren't, Balki. They are bicycle chain lubes.
-
• #143
Yeah, but they are fucking noisy and they last for 7 minutes.
Oil FTW!

With a new chain I leave off cleaning it for as long as possible as I think the factory lube is probably better than anything I can put on it and better applied.
When it comes to cleaning I use Jizer with a brush, then rinse it off with water, leave it to dry and then use a spray oil called メンテルーブ (Mente-lube) by WAKO'S, a maker off all things oily here in Japan. I spray it on while running the chain and then wipe off the excess with a rag.
Every time I remove a chain for any reason I clean it by putting it in a soft-drink bottle full of Jizer and shaking it vigorously - you'd be amazed at the crap left in the bottle afterwards. I then put it in another bottle of メンテルーブ and shake it about to get the lube into the rollers, wipe it off and replace it on the bike.
Every time I clean a chain I notice how much smoother it runs. More so on my geared machines.

jizer ? is that like fizzy jizz ?
I just give the chain a squirt of GT85 then run it through an old rag for 10-15 revs of the crank when I get home, then give it another quick squirt in the morning before leave for work. I check the tyres for stones at the same time, so it only takes a minute. GT85 drys out and leaves PTFE on the chain so it doesn't attract crap. And its cheap.
Works for me and I do 14 miles each way on shitty country lanes in all weather
