  • Did it contain viagra?

  • don't pick your nose (maybe you don't)

when I worked in an office all the nose pickers had more colds than non nose pickers

  • Tynan, thats a joke right?

    ;P

  • On a more serious note, I do think that anti-bacterial sprays and the like are a complete crock. Basically an expensive way of watering down your immune system.

  • Tell your immune system to HTFU. The cold virus is scared of me. Bottle of vodka as standby.

^ Pretty funny this is exactly what I'm doing 2 years later.

Was discussing mega-dosing Vitamin C with people at work.

Does anyone have any actual proper wonder real scientificy studies on this kind of thing?

Tynan, do you have links to the studies of stuff you're talking about (VitC and zinc)? Thanks!

  • Orange juice, bananas, gloves, socks, hat.

  • Wash your hands. Clean your teeth. Stay in school. Don't do drugs.

Vit C is bollocks, as tynan might agree....

  • Onions

  • My Mum swears by a medicinal whisky every evening at 6pm, or 5pm if she's staying with me. It fights off colds you know.

  • I read somewhere once (it could have been the back of a toilet door) that simulating a fever can help.

So if I feel a cold coming I go and sit in a sauna with some water for as long as I can.

Don't know if it works but I haven had to take a (genuine) day off sick in a while

  • Colds are just another reason to avoid people and drink heavily on your own.

  • @Ed
That 'works' on the same principles as people are advocating the use of temperatures to speed up recovery time- currently en vogue in America and elsewhere...

in '' because it works, but can lead to exacerbation of the symptoms- but works on the principle that the virus/ bacteria is less well adapted to Temp rise than your body.

  • Cold Showers people...a few minutes of cold everyday gives you a super immune system

  • Ben Goldacre (Dude that wrote Bad Science) says Vitamin C, anti-oxidants etc etc etc no proof, no proper clinical trials carried out, all based on tabloid 'cherry picking' of 'facts' from mostly non-clinical trials by companies mostly marketing pills...lifestyle products....etc etc....

I don't know where I'm going with this.....

I don't doubt Benny G is right about claims made for Vitiman C as an anti-oxidant being unproven - and for claims made for anti-oxidants in general being unproven - and about the woeful 'health' reporting in tabloids (we have dead children to prove their efficacy in this area).

But you are conflating a load of things here.

The idea behind using Vitamin C for colds is not based on it's potential to alleviate oxidative stress, to mop up free radicals, but on it's claimed ability to hinder the virus through disabling it's ability to enter the cell.

Even here don't take my word for it, I'm no scientist, it might be a load of horseshit, the evidence is inconclusive.

  • Links? Studies? Please won't someone think of the children and google it for me? I'm watching Wire in the Blood.

  • [hippy/ HTFU and deal with it...

  • eat garlic

  • blah blah blah new radicals, blah blah blah

  • Vitamin C was burned into the conciousness of the West when a scientist "conclusively proved" that vitamin c reduces colds via a side observation oh his studies of scurvy back in the 60's or 70's. Since then i think scientists have agreed he was an attention whore and his evidence was non-existent clap trap. But lo and behold, everyone believed it and still do and the drug companies are more than happy to let it run and encourage it.

I might i have made all that up, but it's what i remember of a documentary on the very subject.

I think however colds are genetic, depending on your immune system. Some people are able to deal with the virus some are not.
I never get colds, which is awesome, just wanted to say that :D Sry to those who do.

  • Was it a documentary in your mind?

  • But you are conflating a load of things here.

Yes I was. I'm not feeling well

  • [hippy/ HTFU and deal with it...

I don't give a fuck about curing the world's cold issues. I just want to bring the medicalfacts© information to the workplace.

Yeah but no one has so far been able to provide links to any studies for or against. Useless googlers.
