Americana tonight. 1/3 of USAicans are now overweight, and 16% are obese.
That's a lot of flab.

Scotland is worse.
In 2008 almost two-thirds of men (66.4%) and more than half of women (59.6%) were overweight (including obese). This represents an increase from 1995 when the figures were 55.6% for men and 47.2% for women. The increase was greater amongst those who were obese (including morbidly obese) where the percentage for men increased from 15.9% to 24.9% between 1995 and 2008 and from 17.3% to 26.5% for women.from here:

Any idea if their definitions of "overweight" and "obese" are the same as ours?
-

So taking your figure of 16% that's 49,121,048 technically obese.
UK population is 61,838,154- we are getting close to being on parity of our total population to the number of obese Americans.

they are.
30+ BMI is obese
25-30 is overweight.WHO guidelines.

England's stats:
In 2008, almost a quarter of adults (24% of men and 25% of women aged 16 or over) in England
were classified as obese (BMI 30kg/m2 or over).
A greater proportion of men than women (42% compared with 32%) in England were classified as
overweight in 2008 (BMI 25 to less than 30kg/m2)so you can hardly say america is that bad.

So what you are saying is that we are beating the Yanks?

The reason I asked as the 1/3rd & 16% seems low.

current stats are 74.1% americans are overweight
26.6% obese.the real fail is BMI- which is quite useless as an indicator of health, but a very easy statistic to produce.
-
• #8441
The childhood obesity graph is interesting, but it would be interesting to see it done on a generational basis, to see whether people are getting fatter or thinner with time.

but cannot post the lecture slides without permission. it was a good lecture. -

+1
Going by BMI i'm close to being overweight, and i'm a skinny little shite.

I'm "normal:24th percentile".
Whatever that means.
-
• #8445
BMI isn't an accurate assessment if you're taller than average or have a larger than average muscle mass.
Weight lifters, rugby players, rowers (probably) are quite often 'obese' according to BMI.
