solid + light means expensive. Be warned that many of the really cheap BMXs have really short top tubes.

Ok. How much is a reasonable amount for something good but not 'serious', brand new? Any particular brands to steer clear of or go for?
I know next to nothing about it all. Most googling seems to give guides for parents buying kids bikes :S
If anyone could recommend any good web sites, it'd be appreciated :)

A good source of cheap bikes.

If your not too tall then a 20" or 20.5" top tube will be fine. These are common 21" t.t are harder to find when I was looking for a new BMX I had trouble finding a cheap one but got a good deal on a 20.8" tt so not bad.
Usual bike crap really. Full cromo (4130) are the better bikes high tensile are the cheaper ones but will still take a beating. One piece cranks are on the cheaper bikes but I ran them for years before three piece where the norm.
Depending on what you want to do a racing BMX may be a good deal for you. These are lighter and longer. Also consider something like a the cruiser BMX bikes, these can be better for people who have never ridden a small bike.

Wicked, I love all this new school goodness coming from riding my old bike with short top tube and 1" headset it's excellent. Not ridden it much, and I am still very rusty and crap but it's great fun. I just need to find my bollocks again.;)

Thanks for all the links! I'll have a trawl through them all this evening and over the weekend.

ebay linky
check that out! i want it!

Similar to me I'm 6' 1-2" there is personal preference you'll prob be ok on a 20.5" bike. Try and ride some peoples bikes or have a go at a shop. Also consider the 24" bmx bike and mbt jump bikes if you can afford them. They start around 200 ish.

Ahh man looks very nice from what I've seen on their web site. I'm not sure whether it's a good idea for my first proper dip into bmx to be a custom jobby I've put together.. I love building up bikes though :)
make me an offer I cannot refuse
The price on their web site is $300, so £150 brand new. What condition is it - used? Fork as well? What price you after? ;)

This one is nicer ;)
http://www.bmxultra.com/news/2007/se/SE-2007-PK-Ripper-Looptail.jpgDepends what he wants to do with it. The pk ripper is a race bike so if he want to go street riding it's far from ideal.
EDIT: sorry vb

that is a maaassssiiivveeee picture :)
but it looks steel? so slightly nicer to ride around than an aluminium bmx!
BMX has been mentioned on here a few times, so I don't see the harm in asking:
Anyone got a bmx for sale at the moment? Nothing fancy, just solid and the lighter the better, not too fussed what it looks like either to be honest!
I've seen a few bmx videos online and it reminds me of riding my mate's back home and fancy getting one for myself for when exams are over in a couple of weeks :)
