  • Would love a bob Jackson , but the bank doesn't stretch that far , hopfull it will be able to at some stage :)

  • Sell your car then, or your tv, or your xbox.

  • Paulus Quiros Design, welsh frame builders that make some nice stuff - http://www.paulusquiros.net

  • Shall add it later today/tonight. Thanks for that.

  • Had a good chat with Mike from Paulus Querios at the cycle show.

Lovely workmanship, very friendly folk. Seriously considering for my 'forever' bike.

Mind you - he did say how intimidating this place is!

  • I get intimidated by polite reminders. ;)

  • reee....

  • TJ is now quoting a 2 year waiting list, despite having taken on an extra pair of hands.

Missing from the list is Paul Hewitt, who does in fact build frames at his shop in Leyland

  • I also missed Swallow they are contactable through The Tandem Shop at Ironbridge. They build lugged frames with some really nice detail

  • Not a roadie but a Zinn mtb, handmade in the w.mids early 90's. Just got this one.

  • Don't be frightened. Be excellent.

Heh, I remember this. I did meet Mr. Moulton but nothing came of it and I ended up doing design work (paid work, wow!) somewhere else. Good mantra though.

  • Lets says I wanted to get a custom frame built to cater for my midfoot setup which I think I will be continuing with.
I'd want it in 953 (if it will last more than a year under me, that is). Maybe 853.
I'd want it quickly - none of this six month build time crap - I'd want it for this winter. I'd want fillet brazing, no lugs, very clean/simple looking.
I've never been interested in custom before but now basically want it to get rid of the toe overlap and spacer stack on the Kinesis and what the hell, it'll be fun to get something custom done.

Is there a short list of builders that would meet these criteria? I figure 953 builders are more limited and short waiting lists even more so.

  • If you are prepared to throw money at the situation I reckon you could get pretty much whatever you want, when you want it.

  • I am always prepared to throw money at cycling.

  • I would go with 853. But its your money.

Brian Rouke would be my first stop.

  • Oak is in Southwark, you could go have a chat with him about your setup- show him the Kinesis etc, which is a big advantage over a Midlands based framebuilder.

  • pffft Englands tiny. Pop to the midlands.

  • Maybe tiny but it's almost impossible to understand someone from the Midlands- you have to get them to write stuff down.

    Why 853 over 953?

True. I don't know much about them though. How's their reputation?
Presume they do full custom and can work with higher end steels?

  • Just wondering--do you need any special skills to build in 953 that you don't need for 853?

    I could just ride up.

I recall that Reynolds was certifying builders to be able to build in 953 so I presume the answer is yes.

Ryan runs Oak Cycles and has built frames for, among others, Jah Tim. His work looks gorgeous. I can't comment on the build quality, as I don't know anything about it, but I can't imagine it's too shabby. I think he's probably too new to have built a full reputation, but what I've heard is that it's very good. He's also ON HERE, plays polo, etc. All round great guy.

He shares his workshop with Matt Wilkinson, who's just starting out and won 'Best New Builder' at the recent Bespoked show in Bristol.

He has to work full-time elsewhere, though, and doesn't yet get that much time to build bikes. I hope that'll change soon.
