Andy, didn't you see? From what I heard, you were the ref when it happened or maybe my source is incorrect. ;-)

  • it was a dirty move, he reverse directly into my cranks, I was breaking so picking up speed.
I dont remember who was the ref, but after our game Will carry on making the move and no ref
    call anything.....
where is Bill when you need him.

  • he did it 3 times in that game alone - should've been sin-binned f'sure.

  • Andy, didn't you see? From what I heard, you were the ref when it happened or maybe my source is incorrect. ;-)

Nope, my reffing didn't meet the approval of the South London contingent do I only reffed the first couple of games.
Had a good view of this from the sidelines though.

  • Cambridge has a thing for ref failure.

You mean me? Even though there was several players from all over London discussing the rules with you. Discussing andy, not talking approval or not. Dont' tar south london, just because you can't have a simple discussion. Discussing the rules between a cogs and elks game.

  • Sarah shouting 'you're a twat' across the court is hardly a discussion. I wasn't really in the mood for a friendly chat after that.
    #fuckyou

  • TBF i didnt see anything wrong with what emmet did to james.

I know you (andy) thought the ball wasnt in play. I think the majority thought it was.

A funny call for so early on in the tourney.

  • Appreciated Ray, a difference of opinion can always happen, and I was pleased to have the amicable discussion post-match with all the players involved.

  • ok if we're discussing it amicably, why did you call it? I'd say the ball was in play... id say the ball is always in play.

  • It was Emmet on me initially, then you or James got in trouble later in the game. Andy was consistent so I saw no problem with the calls... I was under the impression that Cambridge wanted "clean" polo, hence the calls?

I'd rather have had Andy as a ref later in the day, so thought it was a shame he was put off the idea.

  • The ball was in play, but I felt that the incident took place too far off the ball to be fair.

  • Being ref can be a joyless task (in the recent Amsterdam tourney I got called all sorts of shit by a player who I made tap out, to the point where he was F-ing and blinding and calling it a conspiracy. Kind of put a dampener on my day). Obviously I hadn't turned up for this incident at Cambridge, but the ref should never be sworn at, bullied or otherwise made to feel shit. The ref is doing everybody a favour, and I completely understand why it put Andy off reffing the rest of the day.

What this resulted in was the later games being reffed by people I have never seen on a polo court, which is plain ridiculous. This in turn resulted in some clear fouls (like the one on Rik) being ignored.

We should all treat the refs with more respect, and we should all step up and ref once in a while. For a city with so many people who know the rules we (yes, I'm still a londoner at heart) have surprisingly few people willing to do said thankless task.

  • Andy was consistent and evidently watching for infringements that took place off the ball. I'd rather have a ref that did that than one that missed 3 repeated, dangerous incidents.

Also highlights [again] the need for a rules briefing so that everyone can agree/disagree before play starts.
