  • Thanks very much to everyone for your help.

What a great and useful reception on my first use of the forums (I'm a visitor from the relatively fledgling http://www.glasgowfgss.com/ and a sometime user of bikeradar).

It sounds like the 107mm is definitely the way to go by the consensus here. I assume that the Shimano UN54 (the current version of the UN53, right?) is the same, so that the 68x107mm will be asymmetrical and the one to go for, if buying new?

dinosaur, thanks very much for your generous offer. As hinted above, I'm located in Glasgow though, so it would have to be a postal transaction...

  • yeah thats right for sugino RD with JIS, totally different for sugino 75 which is iso

  • P.S. I hope resurrecting old threads is OK here. This one seemed sensible for my questions.

    Welcome to the forum Krakow.

You did exactly the right thing by resurrecting a relevant thread and asked sensible questions. Hope you're sorted now.

  • @Krakow: It'll be a well travelled bottom bracket because it was sent to me from Liverpool. Send me a PM with your weegie address and if you send a couple of quid (paypal?) for postage I'll mail it up to you.

  • Thanks dinosaur, just going to PM you now, very generous of you.

@andyp, thanks for the welcome. It makes sense to me, but I've used some forums in the past where it meets with much telling off and posting of Zombie jpegs for some strange reason, so you never know.

  • I'm gonna get the StealthWheel™ on the DeathBike™ today... Because I'm crap with chainline am I gonna have a problem going from Sugino 75 BB and cranks to Goldtec hub and EAI cog, I've been running a Phil hub up until now... Cheers muchly...

  • Four snot blocks and you're asking questions like that? Sheesh.

According to Sheldon (you've heard of him right? :-) there's going to be about a 2 mm difference. You'll probably get away with that, if not then you need a longer bb axle.

  • I know I'm gonna go from a 42mm to a 45mm chainline but don't know how much diff that's gonna really make when I'm riding... Expect I'll find out soon enough... Could do without splurging on a new BB/axle...
You may not remember, but I'm the twat that got his first wheels built and the chainline was 10mm out... Expensive (and very embarrassing) mistake... They still laugh at me down at BC about that one... And rightly so... The snot blocks are drunken fucktard points, nothing to be proud of... ;]

  • Anyone use this combo? Read that people have problems with the chain being very close to the spokes when using goldtec hubs and certain cogs [Here]. Anyone use the above combo with success?

[Sorry for the repost but really need to get a cog ordered now and thought I'd be more likely to get a response here]

  • Mine runs fine! I run DA cogs on both sides.

  • search for "transmission database" for a thread of good chainline combos

    Great, thanks.

I did have a look, everyone with Goldtec hubs seemed to have EAI cogs which are twice the price!

  • Are DA cogs narrower than EAI? Check Sheldon Brown's site for info.

Cog/chainline is one area where it's not such a good idea to scrimp on the £££, IMO. You can get EAI cogs for £20 from hubjub. And they will last forever :)

That's what I was trying to find out, didn't know if Sheldon's databases would be up to date.

Anyway, someone's bringing a spare DA Cog round for me to try so hopefully I'll be able to tell if it'll work!

  • DA cogsare fine on Goldtecs. I've been using them together for years.

  • I wouldn't think Shimano would change the width of their cogs, but you never know

    Excellent! Cheers.

  • More Goldtec chainline questions. The Gazelle is minus a bottom bracket, it has Galli cranks, what BB to get (pref Campag) to get a good chainline with the Goldtec hub? Galli cranks are 170, look pretty much like these:

  • Had a look in the transmission database but nobody else seems to be running Those ^ older Galli cranks. Is there anything they'd be the same as in terms of dimensions? I believe that they were basically copies of a Campag model but not sure which one.

  • VanUden - you might get more replies if you post this in the mech 'n fixing section.

    re you question...

...I have no idea if it'll work, but you could:

    • measure the axle of another BB you have,
    • install BB,
    • install cranks,
    • measure the chain line,
    • work out how many mm's you're out,
    • buy a BB that coresponds to that length (1mm out either way isn't going to kill you).
  • Good idea, think I will, just wanted to keep the thread updated but Mech is the logical category. Cheers for the tips as well, I'll see if I can get some feedback first.

  • Many have said that it couldn't be done, that in fact it was impossible and that if by some monumental fluke it were to happen it would bring great chaos. The interwebz will melt, hipsters will wither and die, as their skinny jeans contract until they breatheth no more. And all those riding brakeless are cursed to never stop again. For it seems that I've stumbled across the one question that LFGSS has no answer for. . .

    :-0

  • I run a campag record 109 mm BB with my goldtech hubs and campy record crankset. If that is of any help to you
