Hi Couple of quick pictures of my nelson commuting bike, not pretty but gets the job done.. finally finished my cheapo first wheel build, as per testers advice ages ago; think they were 60 euro or something. Also got some s500 levers, which are so much nicer than the tektro ones i had before. Bodged on fullish mudguards this winter using an old chromoplastic and some cable ties, works great. Thanks again to @adroit for the reflective tape. Please excuse the uncut steerer (will do it soon) and the red refuses; Chain Reactions sent me the wrong colour but I kept them as they gave me a 20 pound voucher as compensation. Might take better pictures when I cut the steerer.

you might turn around your stem, can cut less steerer, will look more good.

Had it flat with more spacers before. I prefer the reach this way.

In Japan for a few weeks and been setting up my Gillen with 10 speed parts and a compact drive-train:

Almost there now but had a couple of issues. Noticed some buckling around a spoke hole and investigating realised there were cracks in the rim at a half dozen driveside spoke holes. So, I've ordered some Araya rims on the cheap, just Y4400 and they should be along shortly. Then I noticed that the Chorus hubs are of the 26mm lockring variety and having only 27mm ones with me I've had to order one of those too from Germany, no idea how long that will take to arrive here. So short term I've ordered a pair of second hand CXP-22xMirage wheels for Y5800 which should be along in a few days and get me by.

In the meantime I decided I could get it on the road using the old 6 speed wheels and 8 speed chain and it had worked ok on a few rides, it indexes cleanly in around 3 or 4 rear cogs giving me at least some usable gears and a better range than it had previously.

Still, a bit of a disaster 10km into a ride today. Bearing in mind I'm taking things quite carefully due to the new setup and unfinished nature of it all, I upshifted the front gently from the 36 to 50 ring not for the first time, but then crruuuunk, this happened:

The photo is more or less as it would have looked looking down from the saddle, the derailleur has been caught and twisted during the shift. A standard 10 speed derailleur working with a compact crankset (Veloce CT) I thought would be ok, I know people use this setup, and it's not like the KMC 8 speed chain is so drastically different tech that this should occur. Knowing little about what causes front derailleur failure I'm a bit confused.

So I've bent back carefully the braze-on but I'm worried it's permanently weakened now, I've another Centaur derailleur at hand too but I'm considering my options, perhaps use a Shimano front derailleur, 5700 are cheap - that may shift better, or switch to either a triple (that I don't have) or a standard double (which I do).

All a bit frustrating, so I'm riding this around a bit instead, some Specialized thingy I know little about, but disc brakes seem fun:

And considering building this up too, hadn't been planning to, preferring just to be riding rather than building stuff up.

A standard 10 speed derailleur working with a compact crankset (Veloce CT)

Compact FD had a deeper inboard cage (like triple); 2009 onwards one FD for both STD and CT: they are stamped as such on the inside of the inboard cage.

Well yeah, I did. Also didn't like quill stems or risers. It's been quite the paradigm shifter.

Had to spray the raw steel on my repaired Vivalo beater/commuter/frankenbike as it was rusting fast, despite my attempts to laquer it. Chose a nice pink to make it even less desirable to rude boy thieves, will last the winter at least before I decide what, if anything, to do with it. Blue bartape is unfortunate as its becoming a bit over the top colourful but it cost £2.
