Cheers, I will let you know. I'm not sure how to find out the A-C measurement on the ones I have (bar measuring it, obviously) as I have tried to search but to no avail. But they are 'RST Launch' forks which are totally slated everywhere I have found on the net.

Based on the age of the frame and the parts on it CC's forks should be fine, I think mine would be too long... Maybe give rigid and fat tyres at 35 psi a go and work from there?

Isn't modern MTB top tube tend to be longer due to the short stem fashion? Old MTB usually have massively long stem.

I really should have brought the bike to London with me, not that there's any room for it here. Instead I've got to somehow find a way to fit new forks, (maybe) disc brake and possibly headset up in Cheshire where I have no friends in the bike business.

Also, I did what I always do before I know if I want to keep a bike or not (see Weigh/Donohue track bike) and spent a fair bit on parts for it.

When I say 'a fair bit', it's probably about £70 for all of that anyway.

so,in a predicament about my columbus airplane project.

spent a nice sat eve yday with football, beer, sanding sponge and polishing stuff.

today i did some photoshopping to try some paintschemes. colour's gonna be bare alu (lacquered), black and fluoro yellow as is the rigeur in the pro peleton.

That's what everyone says about all my bikes. Just wait and this will be a peach.

Plus it's a bit of a mish-mash train wreck at the minute. It has blue 22.2mm Planet-X bars with a dodgy black shim, a stem with a rounded bolt, and non-matching shifters and brake levers.

i think this is a kinda futile post because opinions are like arseholes and too much choice is too much..

I think you'll spend a lot of money of parts that don't work together meaning you have to then but more parts to work with some of those that you bought and not use the rest of what you originally bought because they didn't work together...

That's how all my builds work - so I just buy cheap parts so I can try a few combinations and see what I like best and then try and re-sell for the same price. It's worked alright so far, though the orange Donohue has 2 forks and 3 handlebar setups.

the idea was actually that in normal right-riding country 'ere ild be nice and suave on the driveside, and shouty and seeable on the non-drive.

Will try get one tomorrow, if I were you id keep it simple for now try some rigid forks and keep v brakes, if you decide to go for disc, and need different shifters, might as well upgrade to 8 or 9 speed, decent 7 speed parts aren't common, but decent 8/9 speed parts are... Do you have a disc compatible front hub? Have you considered having disc tabs and support added to rear?

For my money v brakes work fine. Work well, even. So I wouldn't bother doing anything but the minimum to get rolling, then see if the sizing works out.

Anyway you should be riding rather than fettling in this weather :)

I considered getting disc mounts and supports fitted to the frame but I think that is where I'd draw the line cost-wise.

The hub isn't disc-compatible but the front wheel isn't great quality or condition-wise so I was thinking about replacing that anyway. The Raleigh/Alex Rims wheel I posted is £24 posted, so a cheap and easy upgrade, and I have a rotor.

The rear shifter isn't integrated with the brake, so I could replace just the brake lever (the one I have is Alhonga anyway) and keep the shifter.

That's the thing, because I don't have the bike with me, I can buy all the parts without needing the time to actually fit anything to it. I'm getting a collection of parts that I can fit over summer when I'm at my parents' place, there's normally enough rain there to get some fettling time in!

How my daily currently looks -

Picked up some Dzr shoes and m520 pedals in the CRC sale and it's a very nice combo. Seems the pedals though have spooged out a bunch of grease following just a few rides -

Perfectly normal with M520s and M540s.

Is it easy enough to get a crimp put in my Dolan's chainstay to give me a few more mm clearance for the 52t ring I have, or should I bite the bullet and try and find a 48-50t 135BCD track ring?

This will likely see some solid nerging but in a similar situation with a steel frame, I marked the offending area, covered it with a tea-towel to avoid knackering the paint and then hit it with a hammer until I had a dent I was happy with. It was a build for a friend so sadly no pics but it did the trick.
