  • Pro PLT compact have nice drop too

  • Filling in the hole in the middle of hollow rails hardly adds any strength. Rail bendage is a matter of torque, so it requires both a force and a distance. If you find a post which puts the clamp near the middle of the rails rather than at one extreme or the other, the chance of bendage is much reduced.

The bad thing is that it was centred on the rails... >_<

But will remember this for future perches.

  • Can someone recommend a pair of quick view mounts that will actually work?

Barflys with the bayonet lug receptacles at 45° work with both kinds of Garmin, you twist one way for Edge 200/500 etc and the other way for Forerunner 310/910XT

  • I think both the latest K-Edge ones and the Garmin Out-Front can have their plastic bayonet inserts rotated 90° to suit Forerunners by undoing a couple of screws and reassembling the plastic insert into the metal arm assembly.

  • The Garmin one certainly does, I use one with my 910XT.

  • Was looking at the Aliante, but not sure if to go with Kium or carbon braided rails. Got an old Turbo on the current bike, which is ok for short rides, but not great for longer ones. Always used SDG Bel Air before that.

I've tried the Aliante carbon and was fine (weight-wise) but for the shape. I can recommend the Tune Speedneedle Marathon, Arione cx carbon braided or the Fizik "00" (I'm on the Antares) I'm a 6'3" lump and had no problems with them holding my weight on a thomson inline masterpiece, or enve setback post. Roads get a bit rough here as well.

Listened to advice for a change and purchased some fatter tyres rather than buying new wheels (hehe)

Substantially cheaper at Sigma than anywhere else at £36.99. If I like them I may have to go back for more at this price.....

    Excellent tyres, worth a link

  • anyone know what the best 700 x 35c white walled tyres are? if there is such a thing.

Schwalbe Road Cruiser comes in 700×32 and 700×35 with white walls. The "700×35" actually has an ETRTO size of 37-622, so it might be a bit fatter than 35mm.

Well I have an Arione CX carbon braided in very good condition that I'll be selling soon as I get something else sorted if anyone's interested?

  • Pretty keen to try the Aliante, but thanks for the suggestions. Will keep them in mind.

Cable routing (assuming brakes and gears...): Do people prefer:

    • Front brake on the left side, and the brake and gear cables to curve around to the opposite side of the head tube (cables end up crossing under downtube)
    • Front brake on the left side, but gear cables run the same side as their levers, so don't cross under the down tube
    • Front brake on the right side, all cables run to the same side of the head tube as the levers, and straight underneath the down tube.
    • Front brake on the right side, and the brake and gear cables to curve around to the opposite side of the head tube (cables end up crossing under downtube)

I did it the first way. Seems fine. Took the bike to a shop to have the knackered BB30 shell inspected, and they promptly told me the cable routing was wrong. Bit tired of the "this is the way to do it and you know nothing" attitude of some "mechanics". Gets old. Learn more from YouTube videos than from some shop jokers. I told them I liked it that way. Also, cables taped up behind the bars, instead of at the front. Looks way neater I think. The FSA Energy Traditional drop bars feel so much better than the Ergonova I used to ride on the Pompino. And 44cm down from 46 makes a big difference.

I might be sat here twiddling my thumbs for a while, waiting for the insurance replacement for the CAAD10. Considering upgrading some parts in the mean time. Swapping standard Red crankset for Exogram (will the new design chainrings work ok with Ultegra 6700 front mech, or do I need Red with YAW? Also thinking of the best way to black out the grey bits on the ring), shitty Ringle/Salsa/worn-out silver Thomson post for FSA K-Force carbon or Thomson Elite with layback, and that Koobi PRS / old Gel Flite for a Fizik Aliante. Apart from that, pretty happy with the build. Arundel Mandible or King Ti cages will be the final choice...

BTW, the + 4mm axel option Dura Ace pedals seemed like a good choice: With the blue (2 deg float) SPD-SL cleats mounted in the centre of my size 47 Fizik R3 shoes, I had enough heel clearance. Good choice for those with larger feet, so you can have cleats mounted centrally. Same price as the standard axel option too, as opposed to Speedplay where you have to shell out big cash for a separate set.

  • You've cabled it 'euro'. It's actually how the frame and caliper are designed to work best but not 'normal' for the UK.

The only decent reason I've heard for UK cabling is having to brake with an arm out to indicate (turning right) you can drag the ideal brake (the rear). Turning left it's less critical you indicate.

Nice one, actually discovered these on eBay about half an hour ago. Reviews seem good so will probably go for them.

Indicating argument is weak, but I see what you mean.

Cables crossed underneath the down tube is fine I guess then? Seems to prevent cable rub on the head tube, too.

  • just got back from taking the new cross/hybrid/commuter for a tool about in the hills. Might lower the stem slightly, but just about there.
TRP revox brakes are excellent, money spent on decent cantis is worth it.
Cable routing is a bit weird for a cross bike, with headtube mounted cable stops meaning you can't steer on really sharp angles without the cable hanger getting in the way. While riding isn't a problem though, just when pushing around gates etc.
and challenge strada biancas and latex tubes means a very smoooooth ride. love it.

  • Having now ridden my Open Pave's - what a great tyre! So much nicer to ride than GP4000s!

a contender for really-good-and-not-too-pricey fixed wheelset?

I wondered if the hubs would be SystemEx, I like them. On-One hubs might be cheaper though.

How well do you think they'd cope with having the green Sharpied out?

  • Whatever you do don't lean.

  • How well do you think they'd cope with having the green Sharpied out?

Not very - it's quite prominent.

  • I've sharpied Vittoria tyre logos before, it wears off when you corner.

  • What, the green band? It's not just a logo...

  • the sharpie wears off.

  • Oh.
