Yesterday I bought a Nitto Periscopa stem on ebay but the seller said they'd run out...
Does anyone know where else I can get one, or preferably a Nitto Dirt Drop? Velosolo and Freshtripe are out, Rivendell and Ben's Cycle both have them but they are £65-70 with shipping which is more than I'm willing to pay.
It's for a late 80s steel MTB that I'm converting to use with Midge bars - Velosolo sell a very tall quill stem with 50mm reach... does anyone have any advice?

Hello, I'm Ciaran and yesterday I bought this frame off gumtree for €50. I think thats quite a bargain. I am very pleased.
As far as I can tell the frame is a Somec track of some kind; Judging by the tulip BB cut out. The forks are some Terry Dolan Cougar road forks. The paint is absolute diabolical which is a shame. It seems to be matte black house paint applied with a brush. there is a couple of dings on the frame but nothing major.
Lugs are nice with campag brev drop outs. The rear spacing is odd though. It's 125mm. Perhaps the twonk who painted the frame got it cold set or something. It will flex to fit a normal 120 hub. Advice on this would be good.
the plan is to build it up as a sleddy beater. Don't know what I'll do about the paint, Would like to strip it raw but the frame is fully chromed under the paint. Suggestions about that would be welcome too. Wont have the money to do anything with it for a while any way.
Sorry about the essay and Mandatory phone camera apology. Also don't know how to embed files from my computer

A second project is my every day commuting bike..It's a Nelson pista frame with crappy parts. Pretty much want to change everything except the frame. Plan is for a fast commuter/ short ride training bike. First thing to go will be the wheels. I want to build something to open pros. Thinking of those stronglight cranks on planet x. Also hate the bars and leavers, no other bars feel right after riding with compacts

I'm gonna sort out my track bike once and for all and reader's wives it in the porn thread. It was looking mighty fine right up until I put the decals and bar tape on and made it look somehow... fiddly. Any suggestions?:

Bigger ring and a white saddle, would help. The rest is looking pretty nice though.

• #69288
replace black electric tape for white.
-
• #69289
Nah. I quite like the black accent on the white tape. It counter balances the logo.
-
• #69290
Bigger ring, white fivegold, white champs and maybe tanwalls imo
-
• #69291
Not getting a bigger ring as would require new sprocket = £100+ on new cogs. Also the Turbo is my favourite ever and hate white saddles.
Maybe gumwalls, yes.
I was thinking all-white decals and black suede microfibre tape (taped all the way up to stem). Thoughts?

normal cork bartape (any cheap shit), then apply cloth tape on top.
classic look without classic comfort, but personally like it without the cork tape underneath it.
also agree on gumwall too.

It might be cheaper to switch out the forks to a set of those threadless bankrupt ones you see on ebay. Then it's just spacers and any old cheap hybrid stem with a lot of rise.

Either black brooks or black microtex tape... Loose the break (for photo op)...
Take photo from further back...
Job done.
You could also get some tan walls...

Good find. Maybe just strip it to raw? Needs fluted Campag record cranks...

Mmmm.... I hadn't thought of that. The downsides would be that the existing forks are chromoly and have lowrider mounts so finding some of comparable quality in 1" threadless is going to be a bit difficult.
Freshtripe emailed back and apparently they're getting some more in about two weeks - I'm in no rush to ride it so I'll just wait.

I noticed something not quite right with my Dolan road bike from the get go... It took me a little while to realise it was the forks that were slightly bent. I decided then to kill 2 birds with one stone, and change the forks for some nice carbon ones (sorting the wandering steering and lightening it up a little). Now, carbon 1 inch threaded forks with a long steerer don't come along every, so months later spotted these in the classifieds and pounced. Had to sacrifice the DA headset for a low stack Tange model to make the steerer fit, but definitely worth it.
Now I'll be able to ride no handed, and have shaved around a pound off the weight.
Now just to wait for a sunny day.
For those interested, here it is how I first got it.

Not really.
Surly have 1" fork, says the Crosscheck one.
Cool.
Fortunately I don't mind...
