  • I don't know, mixing it up sounds like fun to me.
I'd be more worried about 24/28 + a big chap. Wouldn't 36/36 (or least 32/32) be more sensible?

  • Red spokes is a terrible thing to do to a poor set of wheels.

I quite like it on the Ksyriums Sl's - it might look gash you're right.

24/28 should be plenty (I'm not that big). The Fulcrum 5's I just bought off Benjam are 20/24 and he's a good 5 inches taller than me and said he'd never noticed any flex. But as A23's don't go to 20h I'll plump for 24/28

  • ^ you need to be a bit careful comparing spoke counts - OTP wheels are often built with much thicker/wider spokes than conventional hubs will accept, to compensate for the lower spoke count. The rims are often reinforced in different ways as well. If you have a look at the spokes on Shimano C24s, they're maybe twice the width of a CX-Ray, and the rims are heavily reinforced around the spoke holes.

So they can get away with 20R / 16F being ridden by lumps like me, when I wouldn't go near that spoke count with conventional rims and spokes.

  • Are you saying I'm too much of a heffer for that hole count?

    I'm totes serious.

  • Dunno, I don't think they'd explode but they might flex and/or start to go out of true after a while - I'm not sure they're the stiffest rims around given the quoted weight and width. E.g. CXP33s aren't available in anything under 28H, and they're deeper (and thus - probably - stiffer).

28/24 ought to be ok. I'd maybe consider 32/24 or 32/28. You could give Strada a call and see what they'd normally recommend for your weight, since they have a fair bit of experience in actually building with them - I've not tried them myself, so I'm speculating. Just wanted to point out that 'boutique'/OTP wheels are often using all sorts of tricks to achieve strength and stiffness that you can't always take advantage of if you build with conventional hubs/spokes/rims (offset rims, 2:1 spoke counts on the rear, straight pull spokes, wide bladed spokes, rim reinforcement etc. etc.).

  • ^ Agreed - If you're keen to run 24/28 go ahead - if you're too heavy or clumsy you'll probably find you're truing them more often than perhaps you ought.
You'll certainly have no worries with 32/28 even with super fine double butted spokes. I built a pair in 2005 and have ridden tens of thousands of miles on them - lots of which were in pitch-black - I'm not heavy but make up for it in stupidity and clumsiness. They've had 7years of hammering and have never needed truing.
For me, the 100g /wheel you save is probably not worth it - but I guess that's your choice at the end of the day.

  • ^^ Not saying you're fat, like. ;)

  • Going to drop Strada and email.

Seeing as I'm decided on Hubs (pretty much) and rims, I reckon they should be able to give me an idea.
I don't want to go to all this effort to build some liquorice wheels!

    It's winter weight. Honest!

  • Got the Spooner ride-able. The wheels are temporary and it's going to get a monoplaner front brake.

  • looks niice, will final wheels be black as well?

  • no, silver.

  • In all the years I've been at Preston Park I don't remember that bike. It looks lovely.

I actually like the black wheels.

  • +1. nice ride sumo

  • monoplanar

You'll find more brakes for sale if you learn to spell before searching.

  • A yellow Pro Winner.

    ;)

    Looks good man.

You'll find more friends by not being a **total **helmet.

    Not cheap, you won't

  • Yes, it did occur to me that sellers who can't spell might not attract as much demand.

Of course, one could bypass the whole discussion by just selecting a brake for performance rather than looks, in which case there are millions of cheap dual pivot Tektros out there which comfortably out-perform any Campag Monoplanar, and many of them come ready equipped with Shimano standard pad holders making it easier to choose from competing aftermarket pad compounds.

    Nice looking bike, H.

  • Rebuilt the Condor, ride's a dream.

    Full on velove.

  • Looking very nice TM. yes. keep nodding my head with pursed lips..

  • Here we go:
My hack bike is an old raleigh banana. I love it. It's ace.

Is it possible to get it back to having more than 1 gear? more than 6? How about 8 or 9?

  • More than one gear?

    I am disappoint.

  • I have another 1 geared bicycle.
Moving the DadTaxi upto more gears would give me a turbo specific bike/a family runaround all in one go.

  • Gotcha.
