have just bought a frameset, its a 70s track frame, 1 inch threaded forks,i had a headset to install but the races are really really loose and the crown race. roughly measured the inside of the headtube seems to be about 30mm and the outside about 34mm - anyone know anything i don't?

JIS v ISO?
from BF:
The crown race seat (dimension "L" below) is 27.0mm for JIS and 26.4mm for ISO.
The head race seats (dimension "K") are 30.0mm for JIS and 30.2mm for ISO.
It is not difficult to mill a JIS frame to accept ISO parts if finding a JIS headset is a problem.

well.. i think the cheapo etc headset i have must be ISO, but if the above were true, the races would be too big/tight to fit in the JIS headtube when in fact they are too loose?

Picked this up at the weekend...

Torn between building up as a townie with campy 8 speed C-Record and Mavic cxp30's, and Porteur or Priest-esque bars....or.....the same with drops and brifters.....or.....build up with a modern group like Sram Rival. The crimped tubing and black paint lends itself to either style.

^Looks sweet, but that saddle-hood drop, letalone saddle-drop, looks pretty big to me.
Lots of weight on the hands, strain on the neckOnly if the bike is too long for him.

Only if the bike is too long for him.
it's only a 120mm stem btw - i'm not exactly a giant :)

seems that i need a crown race smaller than ISO and upper/lower races larger than ISO
