And also for a cosmetic reason - either a nice frame or carbon, where chain can actually do some damage.

As I point out every time some bedwetter worries about 1 x n transmission, we rode for decades with single chainrings and never felt that chain droppage was such an issue that we needed to invest in "solutions"
Being a year older than me doesn't make you an authority in old days...

Unless it's a chainring with ramps to assist changing then there won't be any problems.

Sometimes in life the chain does come off.

Fuck all of you. Chatting rubbish about few links of chain when the whole bike looks like Tynan's Special Build.
Personally I'd use a Driveline bash guard. Iz nice. Then you can jump kerbs.

MTB - you'll need a chain keeper.
Road - not necessary.

got a 50s falcon, 5 speed casette and 1 chainring, i have the chain, which is slightly different to any single speed or geared chain i've seen before, in shape and dimensions.
the bike needs new crankset/chainring, anyone know what size chain it might be?Pics?
If you're replacing the cranks and chain ring then you may as well switch the screw on block, no?
Depending on the set up you might also be able to switch to a 6/7 speed. If the Shifter is friction there's a good chance it'll work (I think).
