I think Gabes snapped a chain as well, I seem to remember he had to bring himself to a stop via a rather painful ablative technique.
Snapped a chain powering up Greenwich park, smashed groin but came to a nice drama free stop :S

To be fair, I can remember when I described my old setup to people here and their reaction was even worse!
I had a single front brake like you, but mine was one of those old Magura hydraulic rim brakes, hell of a lot less risk of hose springing a leak (it was a braided hose too).
It all worked fine for me for 6-7yrs with rear gears only on my old MTB framed city bike, but then I did have a hugely grippy 1.35" slick tyre up front.
Meh, horse for courses.

Is their a thread for everyone's first attempts at a fixed build? This was mine a good few years back now! Oh dear.

Looks like you really need to sort the saddle and bar levels, that might help a lot!

Yeah I know, as I said many years ago now! And those things were changed after my first ride! Also pedals with straps were added! Oh what fun!

^^that's why brakeless = SS with 1 brake = stupid
Riding fixed I've had a chain skip off the 'ring once, even though chain tension regulary adjusted, going fast downhill, hit a little bump. It was wet and my front brake wasn't great. Not a good experience.
How bad was your chainline? I've never lost the chain riding fixed of SS.
I've never snapped a 1/8th chain either. But a few 9 and 10 speed chains*
*once was through my bodged installation of a Shimano chain without the proper pin.

Yes. Yes you do.

I once threw a chain on a brakeless fixie going down a hill with SPDs on. Never again.

Not trying hard enough...

I have only thrown it with a horrible chain line + loose chain. I am also pretty bad for running a slack chain (max performance)

Has anybody actually snapped a chain though? As in, one of the plates has broken in half?
-
• #57118
I've snapped an old 8spd chain. It did have a hole in the plate though like this -
Not sure if that helped on top of the lack of maintenance, age and rust

-
• #57123
restlessness pretty much.
I keep wanting to buy new fancier parts for it but then have to remind myself I'm meant to be saving for a new wheels, and a frame, and a groupset.aesthetically I want to take out that spacer below the stem, but it fits me so perfectly that I shouldn't fuck with it.
