My mate found this in the street.
Neuron tubing, nicely fillet brazed.
Proper mudguard eyes in brale bridge and seat-stay bridge, rack braze-ons.
I guess this was built for Audax.
Needs a front fork -I'm going to build it up for Mrs Absurdbird (she's a foot shorter than me)Any one have a suitable fork?
Tokyo Fixed have/had steel forks for £30.
That's a neat frame and a great find.

It's all Sram Red but I removed the logos using Carbolift and plenty of elbow grease. If you decide to go the same route leave out the Carbolift it doesn't work anything like advertised. I had planned on stripping everything but didn't have the patience after seeing how badly it worked on the other parts.
I understand the marketing reasons but the majority of road bikes have a tendancy to look like billboards these days. 11 Giant logos on the frame a fork seems a tad excessive.
Blimey, good effort there - thought the group (crankset particularly) looked too nice to just be Rival. I think because you've managed to get the logos off everything else the frame looks extra awesome. Love those Giant frames, they look so serious and really fast - looks extra amazing with the deep sections on.

Oh so hard to picture with my limited photography skills but polished and engraved 1st gen Athena chainset next to an original untouched version (original condition of the polished was similar):

how many days did that take you?
By hand or machine?
I tried once with machine, tool was too small (4") so left swirl marks, think by hand or a huge bench flap (12"+) wheel is whats needed -

The advantage is low weight, the disadvantage is that they lose air faster.
The main advantage is lower rolling resistance. Anecdotal suggestions of better puncture resistance too. Light weight, not so much. There are butyl tubes lighter than any latex ones for weight weenies, e.g. Conti Supersonic butyl are about 20g each less than Mich latex.

Tourer for this summer/winter bike built around a bargain (forum) 90s Randonneur 531ST frame. Does anyone have a Shimano cassette tool I could borrow?
I particularly like the god-knows-how-old Titan stem that came in a box of freecycle bits from Mister K.Rollin' on 35s.

Look real good, and the cassette is tiny!
What's with the racing (look more like TT) gearing on it?

Any one have a suitable fork?Wow!
Thats a seriously sweet find.
If you're in London I'd go to BLB as they'll have a selection of 2nd hand forks you can look though, as well as their own.
What size is it btw? The headtube is tiny! If it didn't have the mounts I'd have thought it was a lo-pro.

I know, I couldn't believe it was made for 700c wheels!
It's 49.5 c/c seat and 52 top.
Mrs Absurdbird is 5'2" so it should work.I'm not sure how much they must've compromised the geometry to fit 700c in.
We shall see....

so, was I right to have it re-sprayed?
There was a lot of opposition before....

My attitude to resprays is if the frame's worth spending money on a respray, then it's usually a shame to loose what is original, as it forms part of the frames story and you can't get it back. If it's a cheap frame, the money's probably better spent on something else.
I'd add that there are a ton of frames out there, so why take a unique paintjob out of the ether if you're after something plain?
But then maybe I'm too precious.
At the end of the day the most important thing is to enjoy your bike, both building and riding.

Also the old paint are generally a lots tougher than modern paints due to H&S, secondly if the frame is a perfect fit, then why not?

what's this nonsense? how would Health & Safety affect paint durability?
Powder coating FTW

The nastier/more effective chemicals in the paint have been banned.

^^^^ +1 for leaded paints.
Walls in my room must have been painted about 1800-1840, and its still going strong even today!

I take it back
still prefer powder coating

I have no problem with the respray, personally, I think it looks a lot better.
Yes, diacompe brake and sugino chainset.
