This I don't really understand.

Thin flanges on the hubs compared with the large radius bend on the spokes means the spoke bend is poorly supported if the head is right up against the flange, so you shim it a bit to get the support further along the curve of the spoke bend.

so that's 10 in our section of the house.
My next purchase will be Planet X carbon clinchers for the chinese road bike.
