What's the budget? Are you modernising or going for period correct? Do you have an existing prejudice in the Campag/Shimano Holy war, or are you a post-enlightenment SRAM user?

i have a slight shimano predjudice, but dont really care, i would like to be as period correct as possible and i am trying to decide the budget so that i can decide whether to sell it or not. might just go for a shimano 600 tricolour group since i already have some of the parts, but i would loove to see a mavic starfish crank on it.
what i would really like to know is what rims would be period correct for the build? and would it be a cardinal sin to run with clips and straps?

Cheers, I kinda like the headset to be honest... and as for a headbadge being easy to make, sure it would be for someone with even a grain of artistic talent.... that someone is not me!
Fair enough, but It's really not that hard to do something simple just a bit time consuming. This is one I made.

regular double sided sticky tape but the stuff you can get for sticking car trim on is also good.

Have been talking to one or two people about holding an indoor 'custom' bike fair. 'Custom' to be defined.
Possibly:
Buyers a couple of quid on the door.
Sellers £20 and extra if more than one bike.
Book signings, tea & cake etc.
No jumble. (because there are jumbles already).
Not a new idea, I know. -

;)
TBH it probably reflects pretty badly on me that I've seen that show. Trapped indoors with a heavily pregnant girlfriend, yes, that's it.

Ha Ha, I'm currently suffering four weddings, don't tell the bride and any other vaguely wedding related TV, at least untill September.

In that case, DuraAce 7400 (i.e. anything from 7400 to 7402), ideally with downtube levers as those stops that fit on the lever bosses look shit. If you're going to use clips and straps, you'll want the PD-7400 which are nice but a bit pricey. Substitute 6400 for 7400 as and when you like - we all mixed according to budget and you're not trying to recreate a specific pro bike. 7 or 8 speed, not 9 as that comes later with STI.
Wheels are tricky - these frames were road raced with normal box section tubulars like Mavic GP4, and time trialled with a disc/trispoke (Comete/3G) combo, the former is not very aesthetically pleasing and the latter is hardly practical if you want to ride it a lot. Fortunately, Mavic introduced the first Cosmics about half way through the life of the KG196, and that's what I'd use if it were my bike. You should be able to pick up a good pair of Cosmic Elites for under £200

Procrastination has led me to posting here again. My daily ride for a good 5-6 months now....
With my old dura-ace/open pro's...
With my mates hed3... LOL. Couldn't bring myself to ride further than the end of the road so just stopped and took a picture.
Tempted to go back to my mavic pursuits. The risers are just for comfort in daily riding but im missing the mavics!!
In the mean time a shorter nitto pearl stem should be on its way, as well as some double mks njs straps, the BLB ones are getting a little crusty after a solid year of abuse!

thanks man, really helpful, i actually have a 7 speed mavic 501/ gp4 tubular wheelset one them in that picture, but its too narrow spacing, so i think it must have been built for an 8. the cosmic elites sound like the way to go, maybe a set of cxp33s i saw for not much moneys. not sure about downtube shifters, the stops are horrid, but downtube shifters are pretty annoying. thanks again for the top notch info

Miller I say have a go. Take your time on it, as I doubt you'll have a chance to build up something as rad as that again. It was an excellent price, and if you can afford to, I would definitely keep hold of it.

leaning that way i think, i've got other things to sell first, so i'm gonna get on with selling stuff i dont like before i sell amazing stuff
