  • If your rear wheel is 126 or 130 spaced just get some axle spacers form a shop. Ideally take the locknuts off the hub (with a cone spanner) and fit the spacers behind them. This means you wont loose bits when you have to change a tube in the dark.

  • the frame is 130mm and ive been using a 120mm wheel (seems to work fine). what shall i do!?

If the axle is long enough, stick a spacer between the locknut and cone on each side. If not, don't worry, squeezing a steel frame is fine.

  • ok, cool, thanks, the axle is long enough for spacers so i'll sort it out.

  • just bought this. can i get away with putting these on it?

might seem ridiculous to some, but i want this thing to be quick

  • Finally got my Surly Cross Check set up as I want. To use for winter commuting, and touring holidays if I ever get to go. I may also take the plunge and do some cyclo-cross.

    Very nice.

  • What tubing is the Basso?

You can put what you like on it, but I think RS80-C50 will be quicker than 7850-C24 for similar money

wow that's alot of money for wheels....

  • What tubing is the Basso?

columbus el os nivacrom, lightest nivacrom tubing ever made, circa 1996.

searched for them, they are all deep section (do not want) and also 250 quid more. which ones specifically do you mean?

oh wait, just found some for 600, but not keen on the deep rims, would look wrong on a thin tubed frame i feel.

  • Not really considering BLB sell cheapo (albeit decent Formula) hubs on deep V's for £300 a pair that you could build yourself for half that.

£500-£600 for a pair of top of the pile DA is worth it IMO.

    Just sayin'

its your bike, you can put whatever you like on it. Don't expect the porn police here to like it very much if you build it with SRAM Red and DA wheels though.

For the record, in relative terms that's not a stupid amount of money for wheels- though for less money you could DA hubs to open pros, or even a DT Swiss 240 build (super nice)... either of which would be much nicer than those Shimano wheels

    cheers, i'll look into those.

and for the record, fuck the police ;)

  • The DA c24 wheels are brilliant wheel for most riding IMO. Very comfortable and will be quicker than 32 spoke wheels too.

I don't agree that c50s would be faster... unless you ride mostly short, fast rides either on your own or disproportionally on the front of the group and over mostly flat terrain.

  • i mostly do long, fast rides on my own up lots of hills. i'm veering towards the c24s. keen on a ready built wheelset as i want to get it running soon, ive been hacking around on my tourer far too long

In that case give the Zipp 101 a look..

  • Very nice.

    Thanks

  • for the sort of money you're looking to spend it may be worth contacting www.wheelsmith.co.uk/

  • FUCKING YES

BB removed after 4 hours of elbow grease...! c'mon the team Banana, you're ready for Armourtex!

does anyone know if this is a good bb?

  • No sunrace is pretty much all low end stuff.

  • no, it's shit bottom-line sunrace

  • beat me to it

  • it took you 4 hours to get out? Who cares how good it is, banish it for good!

  • it took you 4 hours to get out?

it was stuck! (this is my 1st fixed-conversion/refurb..i'm still learning!)

No sunrace is pretty much all low end stuff.

    cheers.. any suggestions for replacements?

  • What are the current wheels like?

A good wheel is a good wheel. It doesn't need to be a deep-section job, even though people seem to like them aesthetically.

bike arrived today! the front wheel is a mavic open pro on a tigra hub which spins nicely and is true so I'm going to keep it on. I need to choose between a halo aero track and the hand-built wheel from v sprint dp18 on a novatec hubs. I'm leaning towards the hand-built wheel because of the sealed bearings.
