It is exactly the same situation as before...just this time with a steel steerer rather than carbon, and I haz a fork that does fit (Fanx Sumo) but still annoying!
Going to fit the CK headset tomorrow, and see if it makes any difference, I can save 5mm through changing to an x2

I have a x4 if you want to try that

How much too short is it? If you really, really want the forks milling down the headtube might be an option? You could remove a fair amount with effectively no impact on handling.

Can you cut a thread into a threadless steerer?
-
• #45481
If the steerer is the right size. You also have to think about the stem you're going to use. You'll have to make sure the internal dia is the right size if you want a quill.

The star fangled nut, is much further down the steerer than the one in the Tifosi, not that it makes a great deal of difference I guess.

Why don't you get a new steerer fitted, sure it would be cheaper in the long run than all this faffing/changing to threaded headset/milling headtube... plus then you could ride it rather than just taking photos of it? :-)
Also, where you had the issues with the carbon steerer shattering if it was not long enough, if you can get closer with the steel steerer through headset and stem, will you not be alright if a few mm short.
1 last thought, as a bit of a bodge, but a completely hidden one, could you fit a quill/threadless adaptor into the steerer, and use that as a kind of extension piece. It would give you probably an extra 30mm, and is essentially proven to be strong enough. *

Picked this up a few days ago. So spend most of yesterday changing a few bits.
Just a few other bits I need to do then its sorted.

The CK possibly isn't going to help it. It has a relatively high stack height you'll need a low stack headset to try. If it's 1 1/8 have a look at the KCNC Radient headsets. I know from experience of them they are approximately 10mm shorter stack height then a CK.

Please could you take another photo with the chain on the big front and little rear.... then to the porn thread!

FFS the wound up steerer is too short. I am upset.
get hold of a chris king grip nut, it is made for shorter steerers, only the bottom nut goes on, and the top nut locks into the bottom one. great idea.
or sell me your forks:)

you kidding? with the cassette & small chainring left on, no back brake & no tape?
-

There today's jobs
Bar tape was off because it was in a poor state.
It that shot it is on the biggest ring up front. But there is a chain guard which makes it look crap!I like it though for £30

eh? shit i was talking about this, didn't realise there was another page!
Picked up this Tommasini Tecno frame about 11 months ago on fleabay from a local seller who had only put 300 km on it - been looking for parts/money to finish and now it is pretty much how I want it - almost... small details. New tires and ideally a chorus or record qs front derailler, but otherwise it is how I envisioned it.
First two rides were in the snow two weeks ago at 6 am- it was like suprise buttsex but colder... and smoother

bianchi has been ruined, can be saved though if you still have the parts (apart from wheel reflector)
-
• #45495
I'm not sure what everyone's getting so worked up about. I don't know that much about bianchi's, but to me that looks like a cheap old one, so I don't really see much wrong with turning it into a ss/fg beater.

Was tempted by the adapter idea, but pretty sure it is a not a clever one, could be wrong.
I don't think that you can get any really shorter stack headsets than what I have on now.
The star nut being quite far down means it makes things look worse, but 11mm short of the top of the stem is too much, even with a steel steerer. -
• #45497
what about a lower stack stem?
-
• #45498

Which would take me to 7mm from top of stem to steerer, still probably too much...
-
• #45499
Damn! thought maybe you could replace it.
if it's steel threadless then surely you could slip braze a sleeve into the steerer and then extend it from there?
i may be wrong though.

Can you cut a thread into a threadless steerer?
yes if it's steel, but it would be a nightmare to do it without wrecking the thread when you take the die back off. also most people's dies are quite old as extending steerer threads isn't exactly something you have to do everyday anymore, and it would probably cost upwards of £20 per inch.
I'll get my coat
