Hard to believe it's the same frame, glad to see my tastes have improved/ matured.

  • I'm keeping quiet this time

  • Repped.

  • shouldav kept the disk wheel...

  • The Thorn Sherpa for my epic tour of South America have arrived;

extraordinary amount of thanks goes to andy.w not just for driving 45 miles to pick up the bike but also pack them very carefully and posted it for me.

  • ^^ one of the forum's famous forumengers under a screenname *nuknow *is also of a portug?ese* descent

I'm a born and raised Portug*u*ese, scorch. I've only been in the UK for like 10min.

    *Portug*u*ese, with U.

  • pretty sure who knows who nuknow is, there are only about 18 people in portugal who aren't on holiday from the UK and they're all mates

    ^This.

  • Whatever it means.

  • Can't read Welsh, sorry.

  • just an update to my built
    new components:

    • carbon saddle with titanium rails
    • carbon cranks
    • chainring

i started to take off the "miche Pista WR" stickers from the wheels. The stickers left alot of glue. I must "spray" the glue out of the front wheel. Meanwhile the HED wheel will do the job.
The new carbon components reduced the bike weight in 345gr

ps: to all the people who know this bike a little more gray... this gray changes alot (sun/shadow)

And we need this bike in this page as well, was already missing it. ;P

  • The Thorn Sherpa for my epic tour of South America have arrived;

How long is epic? Really wanted to do something like that this summer but hasn't come together... I'm jealous, maybe next year. or India....

also are you keeping that ridiculous stack height?

  • Probably, it's a touring bike after all, function over form (right down to the mirror), might be fitting butterfly handlebar soon on it.

epic as in going through every countries apart from Venezuela and Brazil (from North to South).

Right now I'm waiting for a Phil Woods touring hubs, so I can get it build with ceramic rims paired with a SON generator hubs, needed something that doesn't required servicing every 5,000 miles, as well as designed for a loaded tour unlike those XT hubs.

  • ah you fadge!

Took me straight back to the school playground, west yorkshire, circa 1989. Thankyou!

  • function over form

Couldn't you just use any one of your other bikes then? ;-)

That shepa is rad. Hideous, but rad.

  • Just finished a fairly modest build of my new (unknown) frame. I have quite a long to-do list which should take most of the next 12 months to afford, but at least it's on the road for now!

Top of the list is shorter clips to try and reduce the toe overlap a bit. Then a nicer/less shit crankset.

get a matching front wheel and whatever bits you need to make it more fitted, then done! Pretty neat bike I would say :)

exedanni - bloody hell, amazing find. Still never ceases to amaze me how many more 'finds' come out of the UK. As for merlin, I used to have a 'Merlin' cycles mtb frame (the taiwaneese built cheap ones from a shop of the same name) then I moved on to a Merlin Ti (Merlin of US) mtb frame. But merlin of leeds, don't know I'm afraid.

    Real life Rep to Andy.W

The Thorn Sherpa for my epic tour of South America have arrived;.

Such a brilliant bike. The sort of frameset that you keep for a lifetime and tweek the build constantly, according to needs.

    Great buy Ed.

Sounds like an awesome trip! You're going to have to excuse my ignorance though - what is particularly special about this bike? I have an old MTB in a shed that I'd struggle to tell apart from this. I assume it's got good bits, but apart from that?

  • Brand bollox innit.

Thorn are the same as everyone else in reality though.

  • It will probably have more braze-ons (probably got a braze-on fucken compass holder) than the MTB and handbuilt frame, which is strong in all the right places. Ed, any special reinforcement, thicker tubes than normal anywhere etc?

  • That mirror'll need swapping to the other side too.

  • I met a lady who toured SEA in the late 90's, she would buy the cheapest bike she could find, ride till it breaks down, buy the cheapest replacement and then give the knackered one away. Sounds fun, but at the same time silly. She came into our shop looking for a replacement before her final leg into Singapore, the previous bike was bought in Penang, an old postman-like bike.

  • Thorn bikes are beyond fugly. They are obsessed with fucking spacers.
