  • Ok, thanks. I might make some inquiries to see if they'll be available anywhere.

Your American Classic / IRD aero / CX-ray idea looks tasty, though, and was the inspiration for my ideas. I've got a new frame on the way and I'm tempted to build it as light as possible but I doubt I'll get anywhere near the 5.5kg you're aiming for.

  • With the proviso that I wouldn't, as I'm not in the market for a weight weenie fixed bike, but M5 and Extralite have disc fronts in the 100g area, M5 in 32h only but with conventional spokes, Extralite in a choice of drillings but with the hassle of straight pull spokes.

I haven't looked at either in detail to see how tough the hack would be to convert them to 120mm bolt on fitment. Either way, you're looking at close to £200 for a hub and probably another £100 to get the custom axle + fittings made

I was wondering about this, and it got me wondering about other hubs. Mainly the Tune Singlespeeder D.

Is it possible to space a MTB hub down? - I'm thinking of 5mm not 15mm btw.

It's a bugger to do. You can only take the 5mm off on the disc side, otherwise you'd have to get involved in shortening the cassette rotor, and nobody needs that. You then have several more problems.
1: You need to move the disc calliper left 5mm, which should be fairly trivial
2: You need space on the non-drive side to clear a disc rotor which has suddenly got 5mm closer to the chainstay than it wants to be
3: You have moved the drive side flange 2.5mm to the left, which might mean you have all but eliminated the spoke bracing angle
4: You have moved the non-drive side flange 2.5mm to the left, making the spoke tension ratio even worse than it already is on a normal hub.

  • planet x make 24h hubs but are out of stock atm

They're discontinued according to the comments on the planet x website :-(

Looks like there'll be a new design available somewhere in januari.
I'm waiting for them as well.
Didn't come across the Novatecs before, so might go for that option otherwise - thanks!

  • Giz, George Hall Cycles did me a great price on CX Rays (67 inc spares for c. £110 posted) and were happy to split bags of 20.

  • I don't think the planet x new hubs will be available in low spoke versions...

Ah, I seem to have missed that post..
They're talking about front hubs though, but I guess rear won't be available either.

    Novatec it is, I suppose.

  • Awesome, where does one find it?

I found them on a German mail order website, but can't find the bloody link to them now. Will have a rummage.

  • 1 x Shimano 'Zen' Olympic chain ring 144pcd 55T

    !

  • Isn't there a pretty light american classic track wheelset? or are you thinking of a hand built set?

EDIT: AC claimed weight = Pair @ 1,585g

I understand the ball bearing is on the small side and may be problematic? (in term of durablity).

    what about a chub rear - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=59124

Huh, wouldn't have though CRC started selling those.

very keen on getting the chub front hubs, if only they have a similar sized rear one...

  • What about getting a 36h hub and leaving a spoke out every third hole?

    =24h no?

  • What about getting a 36h hub and leaving a spoke out every third hole?

    =24h no?

This. I had to do similar with a set of Campagnolo Khamsin wheels...

  • !

€100 of chainring but it's bloody big and awesome and rare so at least if I look after it it'll still be worth a few quid if I ever decide to let it off...

  • What about getting a 36h hub and leaving a spoke out every third hole?

    =24h no?

You end up using 4 different spoke lengths for the wheel, and you can't have uniform spoke tension even per side as the spoke angles are slightly different between 'pulling' and 'pushing' spokes. Generally to be avoided except as a way of using up stuff you already have in the parts bin.

  • Just ordered almost €1,000 of parts to finish my Fort... 1 x Nitto SP72 Jaguar track bike seat post (NJS) 27.0mm

Which Fort takes a 27.0 seat post?

  • His Fort.

  • Looking better than my Midge...

  • Which Fort takes a 27.0 seat post?

    Track 7005...

  • His Fort.

One of us is trying to be helpful. The Sanko steel ones take a 26.8 and the 7005 alloy ones take a 27.2, AFAIK.

  • My 7005 took a 27.2mm.

Mr.Tester you are truly my hero, just occurred to me that you are in fact correct! Looking at the website I ordered from I must have clicked the wrong size in my haze of excitement! Have sent them an e-mail now though and hopefully the order will be ammended before it is shipped!

Have a leprechaun by way of thanks.
