I'm guessing the same reason as I went for the Pompetamine - it gets the job done for about a fifth of the price of something noticeably better.
That doesn't answer the question as the same approach could have been used for the parts.
My question is why put some fairly expensive/nice parts on a cheap frame.
Nothing wrong with that of course, but just wondering. -
• #38356
Yeah for some reason I also like that purple stem. I like the bike as a whole too by the way. The details might have put me off if I hadn't seen a picture of it, I mean purpl stem, aerospoke, white tyre, but it really comes together nicely. (I also rock an aerospoke occasionally so I'm not hatin, I love the way kids in the street look at it lol)
...just don't let them 'have a go, mate'

But it's easier to feel the benefit of spending 100 rather than 10 on a chainset, where an extra 90 on a frame makes essentially no difference.

Yes, the money needs to be saved somewhere I guess. Although the chainset example is not a good one when the chainset in question is an expensive square taper one when I could get a superior external BB chainset for half the price!

That was my guess too. I really like the BMW with canti mounts somebody posted up in porn a bit back but must have been several times more expensive than my pompino frame (not that I'm doubting its superiority, just crazy how much more you have pay to get something much better).
I've stuck cheap shit on my pomp tho.

My new finish on an old frame. Chromed 6" ends, bridge and crown plates. Crimson red that looks darker than this photo suggests. Had two shallow dents filled. Great job by Argos. Bad news: on the fork crown area there's 5mmx8mm patch of missing paint, looks to me like an error in masking but it may have got a knock in transit I suppose, (meaning Argos did this perfectly) looks like I'll have to do some touchup. Which isn't ideal. Otherwise a good job.
Amazing!

^Good to see the effort was taken to lay out cotten wool to protect the frame!
So nice!

You might want to double check the seatpost dia with some callipers before you go buying a Thomson.

Light bike project based on one of these
I'm going to try and make a 5.5kg bike without crazy gram shaving and still making a proper functioning track bike.
Initial parts list
Dolan Seta 1.1kg (with headset and seatclamp)
Carbon Fork 360g
Carbon Seatpost 200g
Omnium 800g (with 3/32nd ring)
Conti Supersonic tubes 2x50g
Veloflex corsa 22 tyres 2x 180g
chain 300g 3/32nd
cog 50g 3/32nd
DA SPD SL pedals 260g
SLR stripped saddle 120g
Carbon stem I already have 110g
EC90 TKO bars 230gNo idea what wheels but need to be around 1500g all in, any ideas?
Plan is to not weigh any parts until the end, so no crazy weight weenie stuff here.

SLR stripped saddle 120g
That's heavy. Care for a SLR C64 Kevlar reinforced proto saddle for Jan Ullrich?

Isn't there a pretty light american classic track wheelset? or are you thinking of a hand built set?
EDIT: AC claimed weight = Pair @ 1,585g
-
• #38371
Hadn't really thought. Was thinking carbon, but those AC's could work, provided the god awful stickers come off!!
-
• #38372
^Tubs?
Oh just a thought. Ages ago Roberto was selling a WW track bike as a split. I also remember when I was searching for cranks I found a thread where he was asking about the lightest track crankset.
So maybe search to see if he was selling the wheelset and what it was, or drop him a msg.

Not sure they do, you used to be able to peel them off but the latest rims seem to have them screen printed on so getting them off is difficult.
-
• #38374
The stickers don't come off the American Classics I'm afraid. We did have a set repainted for our Dolan Seta though.
Got some in stock (Tokyo fixed) if you want to pop in and have a look. -

You can get the hubs on their own. The rear is 24h, so self build with some decent deep carbon rims? Also means you can use a road hub on the front - altho if its for the track I guess the axle would have to go?
I'm guessing the same reason as I went for the Pompetamine - it gets the job done for about a fifth of the price of something noticeably better.
