How often are you going to whiten the walls ?
Are are you thinking of another kind of protection (either protect the tyres of the wall)?it's not too bad a the moment because the dirty marks are underneath the tyres - i was thinking maybe white gaffer tape in vertical lines?

i wood just put some attractively stained oak or the like in vertical strips beneath the hooks.
might take about 15 minutes total time.
