  • Great stuff that Westmalle!

  • Keppel, that frame Tom has made you is fantastic I don't know much (anything) about frame building, but is that joining point in the rear stay for the belt going to stand up to the stress if you're really hammering it? Anyway, really nice frame.

    and this

is pure porn. Just, wow - even the decals! Wow.

  • evening all: nothing of great beauty but its what Im getting together....winter training top of the menu!!

cheers, I'm super happy with it.

I'm sure that It will be ok, I used to have an old Giant Cadex mountain bike, the rear dropouts were aluminum and held onto the bike with a couple of allen key bolts. that bike stood up to years of abuse.

This thing is steel and has the dropout is brazed/bolted together, its going to have a much easier life too.

I guess if it does fail, I can get it fixed, but I'm pretty confident it will be fine...

  • Nice wharry! What rims?

  • Rims look like Open Pro CD (grey), at least that what I think, my favourite rims.

    Excellent Aende though, faultless.

    Thanks..

    Yep.. Open Pro CD

  • And this is what I am currently tinkering with. 97 GT Tempest with 96 Judy SLs & Sun Rhyno rims... my teenage rip, hopefully getting a new lease of life.

  • A friend of mine has just started building frames, so I hit him up for one...
More details can be found here...

donny's a really great guy, used to know him back in norwich. good to see he's making things that ace :)

  • Thought I would share some pictures of the Aende build I recently finished for a friend.

    Wow...
    shit the ceiling

  • Oh my god I remember those fork!

  • Just got my new set of wheels for my Revolution Track, now unsure as to remove the Lettering on the Rims...looks like they are just stuck on.....any ideas ?
    Constructive or Not accepted

^he said they were stuck on.

We're clearly not dealing with an orange here.

Yeah, we're dealing with stickers, which stick on AND THEN AS IF BY MAGIC can be peeled off.

Just had to find out what the neg rep message reads.... Thanks Nigel.

    saweeeet ride!

  • a vintage Toei from 1971, slightly adapted to fit 700c wheels and a wider rear axle, then resprayed

Did it get the entire dropouts replaced? Didn't think verticals were around in the '70s. Ultra nice frameset btw, I'm actually a bit jealous and I don't even normally like these randonneurs. Velo Orange has some hammered mudguards for half the price of Honjos.

  • nice big, "bikes-only" room, wharry! well sorted! :))

Could be, but then again, vertical dropouts are more of a functional choice (fenders) than a sign of the times. They've been used on bikes like these since the 1930s and maybe before. Also see the last couple of pics on this page

  • wharry, those are beauties, all 3

more bikes, less furniture > the way to go ;)

  • Loving the Aende, and the Toei is something rather special :) Great stuff!

  • Cheers both! (^^^^^^^^^ Ed and Wharry) think I need those rims for my new build... they are lovely!

  • Hammered ones are already a cliche. I think they look boring and shit.

Bully for you! Like your posts then?

    ;-)

  • Trued up my wheel that I built last week. I've managed to get it to within a fraction of a mm, using tie wraps and my frame as a jig. Pretty pleased with the end result. I haven't ridden it yet, as I realised I don't have an inner tube with a long enough valve! Should have a couple arrive tomorrow hopefully.

One thing I have found is the spoke tension isn't totally even around the wheel. None are really loose or anything like that. They're all nice and tense, but some are a little less tense. Will this be a problem? Will I need to re-tension the wheel after a bit of riding?

On a different note, I'd love to hear recommendations for front rim to suit the B43 on the rear. Only criteria is it needs to be affordable (up to £25ish), 32h and have a braking surface. Can't decide whether to go with some sort of deep V or go the opposite way.

I'm thinking something like a Rigida DP18/Mavic CXP22 at the moment (leaning towards CXP22). Thoughts on these/any other suggestions would be great :)

I've just come back from the workshop, chatting my road bike over. He's got some mad ideas brewing up. One of which I'd simultaneously thought up last night, so when he mentioned it I just said "yep".

Looking forward to it. Less looking forward to buying all the bits...

  • Picked up this rather neglected Mercian a few weeks back and looking forward to restoring it-it's full 531 professional tubing, nice lugless fillet brazed construction and despite a totally seized BB that has now been dissolved (the paint was really scabby and had been badly touched up over the BB anyway) there is a rather nasty dent in one of the stays which I'm a bit concerned about but should be ok.... I really like the pearlescent white with blue mercian stickers though-normally I prefer the gothic end of the spectrum-so I may re-do this with powdercoat as opposed to enamel.

I do however need to figure out what to do with the forks as the chrome has peeled pretty badly on a couple of spots and I don't know how well they'll take a powdercoat or if it'd look really scabby and uneven. Chances of buying a new pair off Mercian for 120 are slim as much as I'd like to...

  • that dent is nothing
check and try to see if it is cracked, if not, dont worry at all

  • I've had a good poke with the paint stripped off and no cracks-it just seems pretty deep for the thinness of the tubing. The frame is sooo light though-seriously can't wait to get it on the road...
