  • Stealth and dynamics!

  • You'd brake with your wrists?

  • I reckon it'd look better with that stem pointing upwards and chopping the steerer down. But then, I'm weird.

Coming from you... i feel flattered ; P

  • Just finished this:

    before:

    during:

    after:

This was my first ever adult bike, which i bought off ebay for £80 back in May 2007. I took the gears off and rode it as a single speed that summer (I had a photo of it but I've lost it, annoyingly). It then sat in a shed for the next 2 years, before leaning up against a wall in pieces until about 3 or 4 months ago.

I threw it back together as a beater-runaround bike (see picture #1), and fell in love with it again... it's been ridden more than any of my other bikes since. I had been intending to rebuild an old steel road bike with campag for getting round town, and decided instead to re-use some old 8 speed gear I had lying around and resurrect my first bike instead. I am soooo happy with this thing, i love it more than bikes that have cost 20 times as much.

Currently running with shimano 600 8spd STIs, a cheap 8spd cassete, deore XT front V brake on dirt cheap 'hybrid' forks, with a random long drop rear caliper brake and R500 wheels. Last thing to buy is some Cheap Time ATACs. Not that anyone cares, apart from me! :D

  • i am(was) eyebrows...

I would have kept it fluoro green mind, but then I like fluoro colors.

oops - sorry, didn't realise you were one and the same :)

I was convinced I was going to keep it green until I went in (to Roberts) - I think it's sometimes nice to keep things as they originally were. There was a nice flam red one on the wall which looked spectacular and changed my mind. Probably the right choice - not sure I could have lived with the green in the end.

I really think you're onto something. I personlly find the less i spend on something the more i can enjoy it with a clear concience.
I had a similar love affair with my first fixed bike:

The irony is, this bike seems to fit better than any other i've ever bought. It's also instantly comfortable in any set up I go for, even when I use a saddle that I was one step away from selling due to hating on every bike i tried it on. It's an eye-opening experience!

  • my current project is hopefully getting sorted this week, its a little mixte for my girlfriend,

so far all parts have been cleaned up and some have been replaced, she's getting new gumwall tyres, a brooks b17s in honey, brown levers courtesy of EEI (cheers again) and brown bar tape, it's still going to be 5speed but should hopefully get her riding a bike more and leaving the clio in the driveway

  • If you're riding this bike fixed, you should get some foot retention, and a front brake.
    That is just not right.

    alain michel TT excel tubing
I will repaint it and equiped campagnolo group set

  • I know it's a pretty standard response nowadys, but that's a pretty impressive paint job (prolly ~£2-300 to recreate), you should really have a go at restoring it before committing to a respray.

... I would do my standard thing of wheeling out my Mercian before and after but can't be bothered...

... just trust me, even what seems bad can often be brought back to it's former glory with a bit of work.

DONT REPAINT! just give it a mighty clean, build it up with era parts which are in a similar condition, get it looking as if its been used.. It'll look tremendous trust me!
