If they are the ceramic ones.. good luck running a brake on them! :S
I had a touchy feely sesh with a set the other day and there's no grip on 'em at all for braking surface. Good for brakeless or rear but for someone like me who uses a brake - fail. Also, they're something like £75 aren't they?!?! ripoffpretty sure the CD are the hard anodised ones - which are about 38 quid a rim. I've been told they work fine with a brakes (though a softer brake block can help).

The Dumb Method
Buy an old frame with nothing fitted to it, casually thinking that you'll pick up the "bits and pieces" to build it up for a few quid. £350 and a lot of parts later that you hadn't budgeted for you'll have a nice bike but be skint and have the wife breathing down your neck about what the hell you're buying for it this time....!
Ha!
Or even, in my case, all of the above, but remove good nick Dura Ace BB/HS/crankset which were attatched to the frame you bought, in order to get respraying done. Put in sainsbury's bag in store cupboard at work intending to either use, or sell on. Then Buildings manager at work decides to bung said bag in a skip.GRRRRRRRRRRR

Haven't figured out 100% what I'm going to do with it yet but I'll get it on there somehow...it's vintage don't you know!! My Dad bought it in the 70/80's to paint a car and never used and it's been sitting around since then!! Going to Use a Black base and then mix the sparkle into the clearcoat over it!! Should be tasty if all goes according to plan, then clearcoat on the fork and silver everything else once the money allows for it:
Silver Thompson Seatpost
Silver H + Son on Level Hubs
Soma Oppy 4X and some double strapsAlready have pretty nice Ambrosio cranks on it and a nice set of old drops or my trusty risers... Think I'll keep my BMX stem too and just give it a polish... Can't wait to have my bike back together though, sucks having nothing to ride...

That's why I said "If they are the ceramic"..
Anyway, those ceramic jobbies are shit for rim brakes. The braking surface might last forever but you will have crashed into something before then and totalled them anyway!
So, are the black ones considered the "CD" or not?
I ran a ceramic open pro with V-brakes on my Klein (now sadly departed) and the braking power was (for V-brakes) awe inspiring.
I could lift the back wheel up into a lovely long stoppie as the power and modulation were spot on.
I "upgraded" to a disc brake, and apart from in heavy rain/thick mud the old V-brake/ceramic rim combo was far superior.

whoops should have read on a bit further....................
no, the black ones aren't cd. the cd's look a bit like gunmetal/charcoal. plus the look unmachined because the machined surface is also anodised.
CD's ftw -

Might have been brake pad choice?
I had XTR pads, they did not last for long, but they gave huge braking power with those rims.

531 frame, Langster wheels, Fizik, Oury, Gold Finger, chopped Nitto bars. Most of the other parts are Shimano 600.
The back brake is a dummy but works by pulling the cable.
Eventually double straps and maybe a short top tube protector.
The End

Some of you may have seen my Raleigh that i posted up here ages ago...well anyway, it's been a long time coming finding the right hubs, but here they are...
Got these silly cheap as part of a comeplete wheelset, dismantled wheels, and polished! They're 32hole NJS, which some people thought don't exist, which is why i got them so cheap. More fool them!
I'll post some updated pics of the Raleigh when it's done, but here's a reminder of how it was...
So, changes will be...
-Suntour hubs instead of the Dura-Ace
-Older fluted campag pista cranks to replace the C-Record ones
-Chromed steel stem to be more in keeping with the overall look -

phasergunalex, your raleigh is the inspiration behind my current project of building my girlfriend a brakeless (but with coaster brake) town bike with track end.
do you have a bigger picture of it?
-
• #2874
I don't really have a bigger pic, but there was a few more close up pics...hang on a minute...

oh I've seen those simply by searching your name in this topic and found the extra few pic.
You're coating your bike with fairy floss? People will go to great lengths to build a SWEET bike these days boom boom
