JIS
And to all those who find it boring; go somewhere else!
Discussions of this type are a major part of bike forums, and this thread is as good a place as any to host such a discussion! -

So the difference between ISO and JIS is the angle of the taper? Or is it the size of square section at it's largest point? Does it basically mean that if you put the wrong crank on the axle it will either slide on too far or won't go on enough?
Last night I tried to swap cranks on my 1980 Raleigh. It had the original cranks on and I tried to put a crank from a late 80s Peugeot. The crank wouldn't go any anywhere near as far as the originals. I think the Pug cranks were about 5mm further out. Or could this just be that the chainrings sit in a different position to the arms? They look the same.

Campag: Italian Threaded
Shimano: Other thread. For which I don't know the name. I call it normal. (British?)Campagnolo thread 33.5mm (about 1.32"). Phil Wood and Miche also use this size.
Shimano thread is 1.290" (which is about 32.7mm), and that is the BSC size and also presumably ISO, if ISO got around to such arcana. Suzue and Goldtec use this, along with pretty much anything Asian in origin.
Both of the above have a pitch of 1/24"
Mavic (Ellipse and Comete) use the French 33mm x 1mm pitch thread.

Good job!
A really good selection of components, which have come together well.

that looks immense...

That looks really small actually.

believe me it's quite big, I've seen a Kona 29ers in Condor once, and in person, the wheels look massive!

Well, the frame is on the small side, a 16", It's the tires that make the wheels look immense, nice fat 2.4's. I was actually a little surprised how fat they were, surprised and happy. I see soft trails in my future, riding on cushions of air:-)

£79?!
-
• #20747
Complete (stock) bike is only about £500, so it wouldn't be that big a surprise to find the frame at £79 if Crane gets store discount
£149 here:

£149 here:
http://www.rutlandcycling.com/13792/...rame-2006.htmlYep, that's where I got it from. I think they only have 16"s and 18"s left, a good deal, but not as good as £79 though! My thought was with the money I saved on the frame I could put into decent components.

TheCrane works in a shop so £79 is probably trade unless Evans has bought up shit loads of them and want to fuck over rutland.
